World Record Carol Service Planned for Kilkenny next Sunday

All Welcome at Guinness Book of Records Attempt

People from all corners of the country are being invited to Kilkenny next Sunday for an attempt to stage the world’s biggest ever Carol Service.

Organisers of the event, which is being staged to help local charities, need more than 7,514 people to sing Christmas Carols for more than 15 minutes if the World Record Attempt is to be a success.

Local radio station KCLR 96FM, and the “The Kilkenny People” newspaper are joining forces with The Lions Club, Kilkenny County Council, the GAA and Kilkenny based international financial services company State Street, to organise the charity carol service on December 17.

The attempt to set a new World Record is hoping to unite choirs, bands and thousands of people from Carlow, Kilkenny and surrounding counties in the bid to topple the existing record which is held by a town in South Carolina, USA.

The organizers are inviting people from far and wide to take part in the event which promises to be a unique experience with a special festive flavour in the run up to Christmas.

The record attempt is taking place in Nowlan Park in Kilkenny, normally the venue for keenly fought hurling contests. But next Sunday the new stand in Kilkenny GAA’s Headquarters will resound to the sound of Christmas favourites with hopefully a record breaking crowd taking part.

The Guinness Book of Records is monitoring the carol service and has stipulated stringent administrative measures to ensure that a new record is achieved. The organizers are using dozens of stewards at Nowlan Park, Kilkenny to count the carol singers.

Admission to the event is absolutely free of charge and each person who takes part will receive a special commemorative certificate of participation.

Anyone wishing to take part in the event should come along to the New Stand in Nowlan Park from 11.30 a.m. on Sunday November 17th for registration for the record attempt.

The Kilkenny Hurling team are among some of the celebrities who have agreed to take part in the novel event.

The reigning all-Ireland champions will attend on the day with the Liam McCarthy Cup, and there will lots of other special guests and entertainment for all the family. Gates open at 11.30am for and registration is free of charge.

This unique celebration of Christmas will also be broadcast live from Nowlan Park, Kilkenny on KCLR 96fm.

I have to work all day Sunday because of the disgusting consumerist society we now live in, and my employer is a bloodthirsty, heartless machine oiled by the sweat and tears of its employees [/rant over]

Hopefully the rain will stop. That would dampen proceedings in more ways than one!

Approx 3,500 turned up and a new Irish and European record was set. Well short of the 7,500 (approx) needed to break the world record.

By the sounds of things they are going to make another stab at it next year.

pfffff I can see them breaking it next year

There wasn't enough publicity about it outside of Kilkenny IMHO. If there was, and the weather was better, who knows?

Have they got nothing better to do?

Not really. Maybe if they do it for charity next year?
