    Hi,

    I've come across a site that allows you to search for a location to put in your profile. (see jpg)
    Basically you do a search and it throws up all the towns in the world that come close to the search.
    Does anyone know how they do this - they surely don't have a db of all the towns in the world - is there some service offering these details ?

    Looks to me like it's geocoding you're asking about... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geocoding

    Hi,
    yes ive used google maps and thier api and geo-coder in some applications..

    geocoding is assigning geographic identifiers to addresses -

    however what im look for (very specifically) is to find out how we can do a search on thier site for a town and get a list of ALL similar towns in the world... my question is how they do this ? does some web service exist or something?

    two quick questions:

    - you say it does not cover the states - do you know where i could get that data ?
    - it would seem you have used google maps alot - do you know is it possible to be able to click a map and have the long/lang of teh clicked point be filled into input boxes ?
