I'm a big fan of playing the guitar, but my influence's have changed over the years, i listen to Slash, John-5, Zakk Wylde, even Richie Sambora (I know), but to this date i think if Rhandy Rhoads were still alive he would of been the greastest guitar player ever, his style was so influential to me while playing with Ozzy, Do you think he could of been the gr8est guitar player ever??

There's no such thing as greatest guitar player ever. It's completely pointless to even speculate.

"Some people"? Oh well that validates things, eh?

Some people actually listen to Britney Spears. Some people like Sandra Bullock movies. Just because "Some people" say something doesn't actually mean anything. Some people are rapists, does that make rape a good idea? No, it certainly doesn't.

And for the love of Dio, it's spelled Greatest!

Anyway the answer to the question is Jeff Beck.

Or possibly Robert Fripp or is it Alan Holdsworth?.

Nah it is Richie Sambora. *coughs*

    Mike.

Allow me to answer the original question in a definitive manner by quoting (or at least paraphrasing) the immortal Bill Hicks ...
    Bill Hicks wrote:
F*ck Steve Vai, f*ck Eddie Van Halen. Man, nobody beats Hendrix. Hendrix was an alien!! The mothership landed, they said "show 'em how its done Jimi. We'll pick you up in 28 years". And you know what Hendrix said?

    "Alll riiiiiiight!!!!"

I think "Who is the best blah blah blah" should be banned and any instigators whipped and raped by Michael Angelo Batio.

Doug Aldridge is deadly though, he's the first who came to mind, not necesserily(damn, i can never spell that word) my favorite.

    The Edge ftw

But being serious here, Stevie Ray atm for me. Dimebag still has a place in my mind.

The last time I checked, threads like these were banned...

But while it's not locked, OP - please define "greatest"

Petrucci is among my personal favourites.
    And Django Reinhardt.

It's all a matter of opinion.

I personally like Greg Howe, John Scofield, Robert Fripp, Slash, Hendrix, Pat Metheny, David Gilmour, Rory Gallagher, & Brian May. These would be my top picks.

    This guy!

    princeguitarvk8.jpg

Well maybe not the best, but certainly one of the most underrated.

If you don't believe me then check out his solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps during the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony:

Talk about stealing the show! The debate rages on in the Youtube comments...

Full version is also up there btw.
