Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

what this? he named 5 world class players he had during his reign. scholes wasnt in there. its too tough to pick though.

He named 6, including Scholes, or at least said "There's an argument for Scholes". According to F365 anyway. He then added that Ronaldo will probably be the next to join this list.

It does seem strange to me to leave out players like Brian Robson, Paul McGrath, Ruud Van Nistelrooy etc. He knew the players best though, I suppose, and that list would be pretty close to my top 6 - even though it's probably too early to credit Rooney so highly.

    1. Ryan Giggs. Been there through thick and thin : a class act
2.Eric Cantona : The Architect of Man U arrogance and class
3.Ole Gunner Solskjaer : Never has one sub been so influential
4.Denis Irwin : The Premiserships most consistent Defender
    5.Peter Schmeichel : Class Act
    6.Andrei Kanchelskis

Peter Schmeichel - I agree 100% and for probably the best keeper ever to play in the premiership and manutd to date.

Eric Cantona - I dont agree, he turned it on in the premiership, but could never play a decent game against the Bigger clubs in europe, still one of the greats to play for Manu.

Roy Keane - No question one of if not the best midfielder ever to play for manu and one of the best i have even seeing play.

Ryan Giggs - One the best players to play for manu, i dont believe he ever really played to his real talents. I think if giggs could his right foot as much as his left, we would have seeing a truly great player.

Wayne Rooney - World Class? Yet to be proven, come back and post the question in 10yrs.

Ronaldo - Same as above, not yet proven.

I can't believe he did not mention Scholes or Ruud in that bracket above. Scholes is a world class player and would get into most teams starting eleven in europe. I think one the best attacking midfielders ever to play for manu, but he misses Keane now as he could get forward alot more unlike today where he is been held back. Ruud is utd leading goal scorer in europe and scored an average of 25 goals a season for manu is a proven goal scorer in europe as everyone knows. " Sour Grapes" by SAF.

I agree with all of those 5 from fergie bar Rooney, but I think there were too many great players to narrow it down to five, but I don't think Rooney nor Ronaldo are yet included in that.

Players I would add in without hesitation,
Scholes, Beckham, Stam, Neville, Irwin, and of course the best striker United have ever seen, Ruud.

By the way, of all of those players, I believe Scholes was the best player I've ever seen at United, and unless Rooney or Ronaldo tops him, I think he'll be the best player I'll ever see play for United.

    Keane
    Cantona
    Irwin
    Schmeichel
    Scholes
    Giggs

Left out Robson because I just don't feel his best years was when SAF was at United. He was nearly always injured, but when he played he played well.

Swap Scholes for Rooney and that would be my 5 world class players who played under Fergie at Man U. Rooney hasn't proved himself to be world class yet. Robson, Irwin, Stam and Solskjaer would be on my fringes of world class list.

AF hasn't had five "world class" players during his tenure.

    He's had

    R Keane

    P Schmeichel

    RvN (during his 2nd season)

    that's it!

Parker in the 'united nobodys' list? What the hell?

    My top six would be:

    Eric Cantona
    David Beckham
    Roy Keane
    Peter Schmeichel
    Ryan Giggs
    Denis Irwin

These players helped ManU reach the levels of greatness they are at today even if it has waned slightly in the last 2 years. I firmly believe they will win the premiership league this year.

    Team of Ferguson's reign:

    1 Schmeichel

    2 Neville G
    4 Bruce
    5 Stam
    3 Irwin

    7 Solskjaer
    6 Scholes
    8 Keane
    11 Giggs

    9 Van Nist
    10 Cantona

Best player: Keane without a doubt

World class players in SAFs time (in very rough order except for 1&2 at the top):
    Keene
    Schmeichel
    Scholes
    Giggs
    Cantona
    Van Nistlerooy
    Robson
    Irwin
    (I know I've gone over 5:rolleyes: )

Rooney: not yet but probably will be.
Ronaldo: not yet and probably won't be.
Ole Gunner Solskjaer: maybe he should be in
Beckham: not a hope even though he did great for us. just too one dimensional

    1. Giggs
    2. Keane
    3. Schmeichel
    4. Scholes
    5. Robson

    6. Tie between Beckham and Cantona.

Kanchelskis, Irwin and Ruud can count themselves very unlucky.

    While I'm at it...

    1. Shearer
    2. Beardsley
    3. Gazza

    (all Geordies so far!)

    4. Sir Les
    5. Given

    6. Woodgate

Ginola, Lee, Tino, Cole, Solano and Bellamy can all count themselves unlucky. Owen will be on that list soon.

I do not claim to know too much about Manchester, but most of the posters above are "fans" and should know better.

    Paul McGrath

    Not mentioned once. For shame.

In fairness, as good as McGrath was with us. He was never one of the best we've had. He became the player he was when he went to Villa. SAF said the only reason why he let McGrath go was because of his drink problem. Apart from that SAF would have loved McGrath to stay. He would have become a legend at United if he had.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

Indeed, McGrath, while great for United, reached his heights for Villa. He was gotten rid of so Fergie could solve the drink problem he felt the club had, which is ashame.

    Keane
    Schmeichel
    Scholes
    Giggs
    Cantona
    Ruud

    in that order.

Didn't Jack Charlton say that he thought that Fergies shouty disciplining hadn't worked on McGrath and that's why he didn't show his best at Man U?
Anyway he doesn't make it on my list for his time at Man U. But in fairness I wasn't a great judge of talent when I was about 10 years old at the time :D
