    Hey guys,
I want to put a piece of stone down as a hearth for an open fireplace ...
Is it recommended to do this in 2 pieces or will 1 big piece do ?
    I need something about 57" x 15"
I have seen beautiful slate like stone down in Liscannor and Doolin ..
Does anyone know where I might get this natural stuff closer to Dublin ?
    Cheers,

Do a search in the www.buyandsell.ie there are a few suppliers who advertise there and can probably deliver direct to your door.

it will need to be in two or more pieces, hearths are split like this to prevent cracking from the heat of the fire.
As for slate, i've never seen a slate hearth, there are companys who do hearths in dublin, try the golden pages

I got a big piece of slate, cut to fit my hearth from Mac's Salvage Warehouse. (SCR, Islandbridge, D8)

You can get a piece of Liscannor stone cut to size, preferably split down the middle. I got a piece for underneath our stove, looks very nice.

I got some pieces of 2" angle iron to support/frame it underneath (painted afterwards). With the stone, you would be advised to apply a sealer or else paint it with a few coats of diluted enamel paint to allow for easier maintenance.

    Salem,

I got mine from a place in Rahoon in Galway city, up beside the graveyard, they do all sorts of stone, not much good to you if you are in Dublin...

You should be able to find someone in your local rag or else try the Golden Pages under 'stone', ring around and just ask for liscannor stone.
