Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

nvidia drivers - are they properly installed?

I've followed several different howto procedures on installing the latest stable nvidia drivers on Ubuntu but even though I get the nvidia spashscreen on bootup, I'm not convinced they're properly installed. I can't run google earth or any 3D games without the system hanging, and glxgers gives me frame rates per second of under 600, whereas properly set up cards tend to get in the tens of thousands.
I'm using a GeForce 6200 TurboCache PCI-E with an Opteron 64 3400+ and a gig of RAM, so while not a racehorse, it's no POS setup either.

How can I check what's not right?

I have the same card as you.
Try doing X -reconfigure and setup the settings again. I get an NVidia logo when logging in on my account now, but maybe thats only because I use XGL Beryl.

    if your xorg.conf has

    Driver "nvidia"

    they're probably installed properly.

Driver "nv" means you're using the 2d ones iirc.

Eck! After auto-installing yet another nvidia driver package, GLX has completely flown the coop. After restarting X glxgears and glxinfo both return errors saying the GLX extension is missing on display 0:0.

I don't even know what GLX actually is in real terms, but I'm pretty sure I need it for something, and I know I had it earlier.
    name of display: :0.0
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual

Do you know the exact command for this?

Is the "glx" module being loaded in your xorg.conf? Perhaps it got disabled in your config.

I've seen them being messed up before. Have you rebooted (or unloaded the old modules between installations)? If I were you I'd try to uninstall the nvidia bundle (I think it installs a script to do it) and the Ubuntu package if you still have it in place, reboot then do a clean install of the nvidia bundle you want.

I presume this is all in aid of AIGLX support for Beryl?

Another suggestion I would make is to have a look at your Xorg log file in /var/log and see if there are any EE or WW lines that point towards the source of your problem.

You could post up the Screen Device and Module sections of your xorg.conf too.

Haven't had a chance to read about Beryl yet, so I don't know what that is. For the moment I'm just trying to get the card working so I can use 3D applications.
The glx module as gone AWOL as of the last reboot. From Xorg.0.log:
    (II) LoadModule: "glx"
    (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libglx.so
    dlopen: /usr/lib/libGLcore.so.1: undefined symbol: _nv000038gl
    (EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libglx.so
    (II) UnloadModule: "glx"
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (loader failed, 7)

Xorg.conf itself hasn't changed since well before the last successful startup of X

The problem is, using Ubuntu, all the installations of these things are done blindfolded. You basically just let apt-get take care of everything and have no idea where it all goes or how to undo it.
Like now, for instance, I don't know how to go about uninstalling the nvidia module and reinstalling a clean one, nor which module that should be.

I'm not really helping myself here :(

Perhaps I misread your problem a little and jumped the gun. I thought your problem was because you tried to upgrade the nvidia drivers past the Ubuntu version.

    I would suggest the following:

    sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-386 nvidia-glx --reinstall

libglx.s should appear at the required path afterwards:

    /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libglx.so

Followed by a reboot and try X again.

I thought what leroy thought also and I'd suggest what he suggested too. :)

OK, got glx back, thanks to that nifty little Envy script available for Ubuntu. It's as you were before, still with no acceleration to speak of.

Jakkass - can you post your xorg.conf so I can compare it, and tell me what output you get from glxgears -printfps?

    Thanks all,
    P

I run KDE but there shouldn't be too much difference in the config file.

as for the glxgears heres my output:
    glxgearsrw4.jpg
The X connection broken was when I closed the program.

i've attached the config file at the end of the post.

Ah, that's even worse than mine!
Maybe we just bought really crappy graphics cards? :(

I noticed neither of us had the v4l module loaded, but am not sure that's a bad thing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,479 ✭✭✭✭philologos

its a pretty old card now alright, but I'm able to run Quake 4 with it on Linux, so its grand for me.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,508 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

I can't even run google-earth and Wolfenstein blows up in my face if I dare try to run it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,479 ✭✭✭✭philologos

have you installed nvidia-xgl? I think you need that for some games

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,508 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Any point in loading the v4l module in my xorg.conf?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,479 ✭✭✭✭philologos

what does the v4l module do?
I suppose you should try everything within reason

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,508 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Well, it's all gone to hell in a handbasket now. The whole system freezes up a couple of times a day and I've no idea why. What a mess :(
