For those not in the know, there is a vibrant hip-hop scene in Ireland. Messiah J & The Expert are a Dublin based MC and producer duo. This is their 2nd full-length album, the result of much writing experience and much gigging, including support slots for Public Enemy and Jurassic 5.

This sounds very different to a lot of modern rap albums. Messiah J’s raps are free of ******-bitch posturing or boasting about 20-inch rims. The Expert’s beats are cobbled together from snippets of flutes and acoustic guitar, along with samples from ‘30s jazz records.

There is much input from guest musicians. The first single ‘Something Outta Nothing’ features live double bass and jazz singer Leda Egri’s soulful voice in the chorus. ‘All The Other Girls’ features a string quartet playing over MJ’s tale of finally falling in love, “after years of dead ends with mechanical, inanimate barbies”.

From ‘Seven Cups of Coffee’, which describes a tedious night of rapper’s block, to ‘VIP’, dealing with a widower remembering his deceased wife, MJ explores many different moods on this album. Combined with The Expert’s musicianship, this makes for a refreshing experience. In a nutshell: An excellent hip-hop album, even if you don’t like hip-hop, which just happens to be from an Irish artist.
