    Hey,
Am considering buying a 2000/2001 Alfa Romeo 156. Have been doing a bit of looking for them, so far what i've heard is great performance, poor reliability, i've heard the clutch isn't worth a sh*t in terms of lasting.
Great fun to drive I hear!
What are your opinions/experiences with this particular model?

Oh dear - another Alfa reliability thread. Lets see how this twists and turns.

My opinion - they are great cars to drive, but unfortunately are dogged by reliability issues. But thats not to say that every Alfa is unreliable and if you get a good one you won't be disappointed.

My mother bought a 2.0 new in 1998. It now has 120,000 miles up, has been completely reliable, and still drives pretty much like a new car. That said, the car has always been serviced by a specialist on a money-no-object basis. It's still on its original clutch.

You get four 'haha's' for that comment ;)

As for he topic, well, never driven an Alpha, never been in one but judging from the threads I read staying clear of them seems to be the trend.

What's the 06 models performance like in comparison, anyone?

I'm at 80,000 miles from new ('00 model). Still on original clutch.

Cars are cheaper to buy but cost more than their rivals to maintain.

All I will say is make sure the one you buy has a good service history, in particular, that the cambelt was changed every 40k miles on the dot, there or there abouts.

As the others say, this one has been flogged to death so many times

OP: Use search. This has been covered a gazillion times before, almost weekly. As hinted by other posters on this thread already.

Im on my 3rd Alfa. Currently have a 156 lusso04 from brand new. Fantastic car. My last 2 I had no problems with either. My previous 1.4 146 done over 100,000 miles, just serviced with new tyres, exhaust etc. No major repairs.

I have a 2001 156,1.8 Sportivo. The only thing that went wrong (so far anyway) is the alarm stopped unarming which cost €39 to recode, and I just changed a speedo bulb.

Cam belt at 36K,Variator (except 1.6 model) and water pump while the belt is off.
    Front wishbones are weak.
Some Twin sparks can consume oil so check levels every 7 - 10 days.
Crap dealer network and labour prices are the biggest Alfa faults, and of course the fact that people that never owned one "know" they're unreliable.

Its so much car for your money. Drive another car in the same class and it wont compare.

If you check out this sticky, there are a few links about half way down to some of the great Alfa debates on this forum.

I just can't wait for the day that Alfa Romeo bring out an SUV with permanently on fog lights - that should make the forum interesting....
