I'm on the look out for a new motor and have been offered a 99, 1.4l Almera for €4950. Fully serviced last week including a brand new battery and 4 new pirelli tyres, alloys, elec sunroof and windows and only 41K miles on the clock.
Also has a 6 cd changer and no previous damage to the body work. NCT'd till aug 07.

    Is this worth it??
Is the Almera a good reliable car?

I thought these were all 1.5 litres? (the saloons at least)
I haven't heard anything bad about their reliability, but they are the single most boring car on the road ;)
Are you sure that mileage is genuine? Its very low for what, in a few days, will be an 8 year old car.

edit: ah, i'm mistaken - the newer ones (late 2000-) are 1.5's.

Gettin it off one of the bosses' clients. He reckons that your man is a very decent bloke and wouldnt screw me so thats all I have to go on. Haven't got the car checked out yet. Only one previous owner, a guy who works in Nissan, for his wife to drop the kids to school(but then they'd all say that)

Took it for a spin yesterday - very smooth and quiet, nice bit of speed out of it.

    I have a '99 Almera. They're 1.4L alright, think from 2000 or 2001 on, they got upped to 1.5L.

I bought it in March from my father (had one owner before him). Currently it has almost 140K miles on the clock. In the time that my father or I has had it, it has never been in the garage, save for check-ups prior to NCT.

Of course my father took great care of it, servicing it himself with quality components.

My father loved the soft, smooth ride of the car, and prefers it over his current car, a '02 Mazda 323.

I think it's pretty decent alright and plan to pretty much drive it into the ground (can't really afford to splash out after recently getting a mortgage).

Any more questions feel free to PM me.

    Cheers lads

Your car hasn't been serviced in 6 years?

Alot of cars can run without a service once you keep everything topped up so to speak!!

The Almera is a great 2nd hand buy.. very cheap as there are loads around. A favourite with rental companies.

I reckon you could do better: I saw a 2001 (new shape) hatchback, red, alloys, sunroof, 48k on clock, looked absolutely spotless, go for €3800 at auction on satuday last. Others new-ish ones went for similar prices.

€5k for a Nissan Almera which is 8 years old the week after next is crazy money, irrespective of low mileage, cd changer, etc. Way too expensive imo.

You can get a 2000 model for similar money:

Friend of mine has a garage and he loves Almera 1.4s and the last model Micras. He buys all he can trade off his local Nissan dealer. He services them, valets them, sells them and never sees them again except for servicing. He won't touch the 1.5 Almera, they give timing chain and gearbox trouble.

There was a recall by Nissan to replace the camshaft oil seals. They can leak and ruin the timing chain and the crankshaft position sensor. From experience they'll still carry out the work free of charge, even if it hasn't been done at this stage.

That's crazy money for that car regardless of how low the mileage is.

    Too much money,

Old almera is a grand car only small few problems -
front suspension rattles - very cheap to fix
Sensor problems in the throttle body - replace the whole unit for about €200
Uncomfortable seats - compare with primera for example

    Agree its silly money.

I am looking at a 00 Ford escort estate for €3K 50K miles.

That makes the Almera look like value!

Bought a 96 almera 4 years ago, has 165k on the clock. It gives me very little trouble considering the treatment it gets (down tracks to beaches etc). I get it serviced evry 6 months or so, and keep an eye on the oil. Boring car all right, but it was good value for €4000
