Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi
a couple questions about the next generation of DVD players, BluRay or HDDVD,
I'm assuming these will be compatible with regular DVDs ?
it would be stupid not to be from a marketting point of view but I hear
it's hard to make a player compatible for both formats as they use a different
type of laser ?? -- but isn't that the same for CD and DVD players ?
yet a DVD plays CDs ?? not sure maybe someone can clear this for me.

And from a marketting view, because DVDs are the most popular form of
media sales at the moment (im pretty sure they beat games) I think
it will take a good few years (5 anyway) for them to become less popular
then the next gen. of DVDs - I could be wrong though, I know the quality is
so much better with the new ones, but the quality now with a HD TV and a regular DVD
is super anyway so ?? maybe people will be slower to move over.

From what I've read, yes, you can play normal DVDs on a BD-DVD or HD-DVD player. You can't play BD-DVD on a HD-DVD player and vice versa though.

Most people will probably wait until well in to next year, since there are few high def DVDs on the market.

But, things like PS3 and X-Box will help the sales of the hardware. Of course, the major film studios will also greatly influence which is the more popular. So far, the majority of studios are going for the Blu-Ray option, and the PS3 makes that even more attractive.

the main driver of the "winnin" format will be what the US consumer adopts - and according to urban legend the p0rn industry drives that decision

Interesting how it seems that most are really going towards Blu-Ray.

This is true. LG launched their combo player yesterday at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It was on the BBC evening news last night.

Its a mess at the moment.... it's really the BetaMax Vs. VHS mode at the moment....

Yes there are dual format players on the way... but there are also dual format disks on the way which need different players etc... total minefield... only valid option is to dip your toe into this area with some product that offers something else (i.e. HD-DVD with the XBox and BluRay with the PS3) .. at least if one of those formats looses you'll still have a great games console...

On the other thing if you are totally insane just buy a HD-DVD or BD-DVD player and risk all that money going down the toilet when the other format runs out... I hope they "pick a winner" sooner rather than later as whats happening now is a disaster (certain films in certain formats) so its like the DVD+R and DVD-R crap..

I'm going to HD media via the console... 2nd gen XBox 360 has been announced so that looks good...

let look back to december 2006. Without a doubt Blu ray is better in every way and the technolgically aware world of today knows this. It's one down fall, the price of production, was cut at the root when sony offered subsidies to level the playing field. Blu Ray is more popular with major Film Game and Porn Companies. So lets all rejoice blu ray is way ahead and will win and unlike with Betamax v VHS people will end up with a better technology in there homes. Ok so lets say i am sony i think to myself woohoo i'm winning and i'm ganna make billions and finally make up for the mistakes of beta max pretty much banning porn on my format. NOPE i'll do it again after spending billions and years developing my tech i'm gonna again Pretty much BAN porn on my format. Sony announced that it will revoke the licences of anyone reporduceing PORN for companies. The single largest entertainment indusrty on the planet actually the largest indusrty of any kind. What would have beens sonys bread and butter and had already announced last year that among the Porn industry the Bluray was the prefered format because of it's capacity and we all know in porn bigger is better. Yup the problem with sony seems to be Techy-genius, business-Moron. To be honest i have no interest in buying porn movies of any kind but lets be honest a hell of a lot of people do. So buy a playstation3 but you'll prob need a HD-dvd player in a year or 2 when all new releases will only be available on HD-dvd.
