Can't believe they are marketing it as specially designed for Vista

I suppose it designed to sucker in some poor unsuspecting folk & it will probably work.

ReadyBoost is the USB flash drive which acts as a cache for the system between the RAM & HD, works well too. Selected drives are already ReadyBoost compatible like the Crucial Gizmo line for instance. It is basically a read/write speed requirement that the drive must meet in order to be compatible.

ReadyDrive is where some NAND is integrated directly into the SATA HD to act as a buffer this speeds up boot times, performance & reduce power consumption. HD's with ReadyDrive are not expected till later in 2007 Samsung demoed some units at the last Intel IDF.

Cant you use a seperate hdd to speed up caching, would that be a bit like a raid 0 with mirroring?

No you cant use another HD for that purpose.

USB drives are dirt cheap anyway these days so getting one isn't a problem and you get a nice free performance boost. Microsoft recommend one at least the same size as your RAM in the system.

I hope someone is enterprising enough to make use of the PCMCIA/ExpressCard slots on notebooks and make a readyboost compatible module that could be plugged in without having to have the USB stick hanging off the back.

You can also get ram drives too, Which act as hdds. almost instant boot up and running of applications.

But back on topic, Its is a nice idea, but as 8t8 pointed out. it is kind of old-hat..
