Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

2006 Wrestler of the year awards

23-12-2006 3:53am#1Might as well do one of these since there's little to no wrestling left in the year. Here are my picks...
Wrestler of the year
1. Edge
2. Finlay
3. Kurt Angle
I think Edge is the runaway winner this year. Finlay had consistently good matches throughout the year too. Kurt had great matches at No Way Out and Mania and finished strong at Turning Point.
Feud of the Year
1. Edge vs John Cena
2. Kurt Angle vs Samoa Joe
3. LAX vs Styles and Daniels
Edge vs Cena was great and never got old.
Tag team of the Year
1. LAX
2. Styles and Daniels
3. MNM
LAX were brilliant in and out of the ring.
Most Improved
1. Johnny Nitro
2. Rhino
3. Jeff Hardy
Gave my reasons on other thread.
Best Promo
1. Mick Foley
2. Edge
3. Ric Flair
Said why on other thread. Foley's still the king.
Best technical wrestler
1. Finlay
2. Kurt Angle
3. William Regal
Finlay carried a lot of wrestlers this year.
Best high-flying wrestler
1. Sabu
2. A.J. Styles
3. Rey Mysterio
I'd give it to Sabu as he was awesome when he arrived. He's gotten sloppy of late but I'll still pick him.
Most Overrated
1. Ken Kennedy
2. Batista
3. Lashley
Kennedy didn't put on one match this year that I'd enjoy seeing again. Not great for the man supposed to be "the future of Smackdown". Batista has become 2006's Goldberg and I'll feature Lashley due to the ridiculous decision to give him the ECW title.
Most Underrated
1. William Regal
2. Shelton Benjamin
3. Matt Hardy
Regal puts on quality matches and is very funny in his skits but can't get a push for some reason. Benjamin is developing a pattern of stealing the show in the MITB ladder match before becoming forgotten. Matt featured more near the end of the year but could be doing so much better.
Rookie of the year
1. CM Punk
2. Kenny
3. Kelly Kelly
CM Punk had a great year although it's tailed off near the end sadly. Kenny proved the best member of the Spirit Squad. Kelly seems to be getting over with the crowd which I probably would have found hard to believe after her debut when she couldn't open her bra strap...
Best non-wrestler
1. Konnan
2. Armando Alejandro Estrada
3. Jim Cornette
Konnan is so vital to LAX even though he doesn't wrestle. Estrada has been a great addition to Raw. I'm telling you if they had allowed this guy to continue doing his introductions this guy would be really huge right now. Cornette has been great for TNA this year. Honourable mention to Lita as well before her in-ring return as she was excellent with Edge as a valet.
Best announcer
1. Jim Ross
2. Tazz
3. Joey Styles
J.R. proved he's still the master. Tazz has been solid this year even during ECW's bad stuff. Styles has been pretty average but I'll mention him for his 'quit' promo.
Worst announcer
1. Coach
2. JBL
3. Don West
Coach stinks as an announcer. Finally Vince realised this. JBL has improved I feel but he stunk at the beginning and I still think he puts himself over too much at the expense of talent. Don West bugs me sometimes too.
Best PPV of the Year
1. One Night Stand
2. Bound for Glory
3. Wrestlemania 22
One Night Stand was probably my favourite PPV for a second year in a row. RVD won the gold and beat Cena (so no riot), Edge, Lita and Foley had a vicious match with Funk, Dreamer and Beulah and the fans crapped all over Orton.
Bound for Glory was TNA's best PPV I feel with Angle debuting, Sting winning the title, LAX winning the straps in the six sides of steel match plus great matches involving Sabin/Senshi and Cage/Rhino. WM22 was better than I thought it would be.
Worst PPV of the year
December to Dismember - Just an atrocious show altogether. If I'd paid to see that show I'd be sick to my stomach.
Best wrestling manoeuvre
The Border Toss by Hernandez gets my vote after what he did to Gail Kim!
Worst storyline
The Eddie Guerrero stuff was just too much.
Best show
I think they've all been good and bad at various times and I've found TNA's evolution to be very interesting. I'll give it to Smackdown though for the wrestling on offer.
Worst show
Raw has been very poor at times and when you have to stay up until 4 to watch it, that ain't good.
Best match of the year
1. Edge vs John Cena TLC Match (Unforgiven)
2. Kurt Angle vs The Undertaker (No Way Out)
3. Samoa Joe vs Angle II (Turning Point)
Edge vs Cena was a great match and I think it was Edge's defining moment of 2006. Cena deserves credit too for putting on a great contest. I remember being into this match big time. Angle vs Taker was a great bout too and really surprised me. Joe vs Angle II was excellent and what their first match should have been. Some more matches worth mentioning include Benoit vs Regal at No Mercy when Benoit returned as well as the triple threat Mania match.
Worst match of the year
Batista vs King Booker (Summerslam) - This was a disaster and proved Batista needed a lot more work (still does). The December to Dismember main event deserves a mention for being another stinkfest.
Worst feud of the year
DX vs McMahons - Just dire.
Best gimmick
LAX. Don't see any other contenders.
Worst gimmick
DX. I don't need to see guys in their forties doing stuff that I in my twenties would be embarrassed to do. End this gimmick please!
Best DVD
I've seen pretty much all of them but the Bret Hart one was my favourite. I felt the Pillman one was a good tribute also.
Ones to watch in 2007
1. CM Punk
2. Johnny Nitro
3. A.J. Styles
I'm hoping Punk has a strong showing in the Rumble, a quality match at Mania (against RVD?) and then a move to Raw where he'll continue to rise. If the WWE have sense this will happen. Nitro will hopefully be allowed to carry on his impressive work. I'd like to see him get a long IC run a la Orton in 2004. I think Styles will be the guy to watch in 2007 the way Joe was in TNA in 2006. Maybe a strong heel push culminating in a strong babyface turn. Styles vs a heel Angle is a money feud in the waiting.
