Closer to <8k even for an i5 quad at 4GHz, surely? Plus IIRC its even less for AMD chips as they have the same processing power as a Core2, Core-i are more efficient per clock cycle! So logically it would be more like <7k PPD for a Phenom quad @4GHz...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

Nah... I'm going by old quad CPUs. A Q8200 and Q9550 @ 4Ghz got 9-10k PPD (this was before the P6701s though). And the AMD X4s were pretty much the same, at anywhere between 8-10k PPD.

Alas, times have moved on. By that same token my stock i5-760 should be getting ~8k PPD (slower but more powerful per clock). Instead it gets just under 6k PPD and my 3.33GHz C2D half that on average thanks to P67s :o

Not quite; like I said, the PPD values don't apply to P6701s. But get a P6020-P6024, or even one of the P605xs, and then they're still the same as before).

Have just received my X4 630 it is only an Athlon II and is at 2800MHz stock.

I have just done a bit of overclocking on it and have it at 3640MHz(stock volts).

I am running a 6701 WU as usual and it is working at just over 13mins a frame, this should be good for a bit over 5000 points per day.

Will have to do more overclocking and tinkering as it has more to give.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,381 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

You should be close to 6k PPD with that as it is ;) Nice one :D

Aye... a Fermi and a couple of -bigadv will do that. :p

Gonna miss him here when he heads back to OCN; it's making us real competitive. :)

I'm going to try and convince the boss here to allow me to install a client on all the office pc's here. They are nothing special, but it should be a few thousand PPD's. I wonder, is there a iphone or ipad add yet?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators, Help & Feedback Category Moderators Posts: 25,768 CMod ✭✭✭✭Spear

Any idea on how long it would take a new client to reach a steady output level and give a good idea of it's production?

Awesome. :D What kind of CPUs do you guys have?

And no, no app for Folding on an iPhone/iPad... unless you were looking for a monitor or something?

3%... nVidia GPUs will be <5 mins, ATi GPUs will be ~15mins, dual cores will be up to 2 hours, quads will be up to an hour, and -bigadv client will be around 90mins to 2 hours.

I've a good lead on the rest of the country in BOINC credits, so I'll give it a few days of Folding and see how it goes. Installing Fermi clients is already needlessly fiddly though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

If you've only got one Fermi in a system, the systray client is a simple set it and leave it program. Just install it, enter your info, then let it run.

If you've got more than one GPU in a system though, and don't want to bother with the clients yourself, you can use this client manager:

I moved over the already started work/queue.dats from the pre-existing clients and it's running with those happily. It's predicting about 28k PPD from the GPU's and I'm still waiting to see how much it gets from the CPU.

iPhone/iPad would be useless unless it was for monitoring, their processors would take forever to complete a WU, and aside from that, the battery drain would be insane.... as if iPhone battery time isn't bad enough!

Just set HFM/etc to upload a web page every now and again... then save that as a bookmark on the phone :p

What CPU have you got, and at what speed?

Yup... got a guide for that:

Core i7 965 at stock speed of 3.2GHz.

You should be anywhere from 15-20k PPD, depending on the WU.

    Unless you're doing -bigadv?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,904 ✭✭✭cian1500ww

Run it with -bigadv if you plan on running it for over 20 hours a day.

I'm running it with -bigadv, since it'll be on 24 hours, bar the odd bit of Kings Bounty.

    But what does -bigadv do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

As long as it's not a P2684, should be 30k+.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators, Help & Feedback Category Moderators Posts: 25,768 CMod ✭✭✭✭Spear

I used 6 or the CPU's 8 (virtual) cores, so 80% usage is giving me 19.9K PPD, so I've a grand total of 47.6K+ overall which seems okay.

Just a load of 2X's but 11 of them running at once should be nice. I doub't he'd let me throw up a load of clients on our cluster. Infact i doubt he'd let me do any of this to be honest as our IT department are pretty strict. But ive got 2 I7's which are heavilly overclocked at home, an X6 and a new sandybridge cpu arriving tomorrow. Also have a set of 5870's and 6950's that can be used. Did they ever release a good client for ATI cards, and do they support crossfire?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

Not yet I'm afraid. We're getting close though; PG announced they were aiming for a beta release in Q1. From what I hear from some of the beta testers, the core for ATi is working fine, it's just the client that's got some issues that need sorting out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,265 ✭✭✭RangeR

I've installed the basic CPU client on 2 or 3 more computers. I wouldn't expect much but it will bump us up by a bit over time.

That's a serious amount of kit at home. Maybe I should throw the towel in over here and join Komplett!

No complaints about a few extra hundred PPD. ;)

My Q6600 hasn't been Folding all week, otherwise there'd be another red up there. :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 hoth17

I noticed you weren't one of them...

but you will be forgiven as long as it is up and running by the fold-a-thon. :D

edit: my 970 is only getting me 30k right now at 4.2. I need to get some fine tuning done on that client before tomorrow.

I know, its been almost a week since I have dropped one. :(
And, now that I am up and running, I get a massive p2684.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

Better than SMP at least. :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 hoth17

you're right, I should be complaining. So, whats up with the q6600? I take it your having no trouble with your current clock speeds, surely its not unstable at those massive speeds you run it at. :p

//not making fun of, I respect that, and only that, Dell :D

Been running something else the last few days, and no enough cycles for the SMP client. Unless I don't mind losing bonus points. :p

I should be done this time tomorrow, and hopefully that'll leave me enough time to get a WU done by Friday. Maybe even two if I avoid the 67xx's and all goes well. :)

Only on rare occassions; normally no-one notices my poor PPD getting worse though. :p

What do you think... Foldathon as soon as possible?
