Insulation of an open bath

In the site where I work, part of the process involves the product being hydrated in a hot water bath. This means that a lot of heat is wasted as it is almost impossible to cover the bath in a meaningful way.

I was told by a friend that he had heard of cases where “ping pong” balls were allowed to float on the surface of the bath, providing some level of insulation.

Has anyone else heard of this and have any more information?
