Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

counterfeit copy of Windows XP on my pc?

I got broadband a couple of weeks back (UTV). It was working fine until i downloaded the recomended F-Secure Internet Security Suite 2006 software.

Since then the computer has been running like a snail.. I click on an icon (e.g. control panel) and it takes 5-10 minutes for the application to load. When i eventually get onto the internet it takes ages to load a website. I was away for a few days and hadnt been using the laptop. Yesterday i encountered another problem. I switched the laptop on and got a message that copy of Windows installed on my computer is counterfeit.. Now i only have the laptop 2 months (A Medion that i got from ALDI) and i never got that message before.

Im just wondering would it be possible that some virus has gotten into my system and replaced the correct version of Windows?? Maybe this happened when i was downloading the security software. If this is the case and i need to get it fixed where is best in Dublin to get this done.. I would like to get it fixed as soon as possible cos its pointless paying out for a broadband connection when i cant access the internet properly.....

Thanks in advance for any tips

    couple of questions on this

you're only getting the problem since downloanding this update?

when you where online previous to this update did you ever have this warning pop up?

what was the performance like before you instaklled this update?

i'm thinking that maybe the update wasn't an update but some sort of Spam pop up and by clicking on it you may have installed a virus or some form of spyware/malware. check out majorgeeks.com they've a great walk through on removing various forms of spyware and malware.

    @ amokey.

I had the computer about 6 weeks before i got broadband.. I just used it at the time to watch movies. store music.. copy stuff to my Creative Zen etc.. nothing major. The laptop worked fine.. it was flying along and i had no problems with it at all.

Then I got broadband (2 meg) and it worked a treat.. after a day i installed the F-Secure software (from an email link from UTV) and it is since then the computer has had problems.. I had heard that some security software can cause the computer to run slower than normal but this is rediculous..

Bullguard came pre-installed on the computer so maybe I shouldnt have downloaded the F-Secure software.

I really need to get up to speed with what anti virus software is best and what i should be doing with the laptop to ensure it is running smoothly.. The only problem is that even opening the control panel to check what is running is taking forever to check..

Yep your right. I was clearing out some unwanted processes a few weeks ago and after a reboot I got that message.

Get rid if Bullguard software as I have heard it is a poor performer & uses other AV engines to do it's work that along with the F-Secure running as well could be the cause of the slowdown.

If it were me just uninstall Bullguard and F-Secure, download Avast register for free and you get a very light weight & effective av scanner.

Avast has a boot scanner that is great for catching viruses before the entire OS loads so give that a go.

As for the Windows Genuine check don't know if you contact Microsoft that should be able to sort you out could be a mistake. In case your wondering why this came up as part of the downloaing updates for Windows one of them was a checker which checks to see if you have essentially a non-legit version of XP. It sounds odd Medion put a system with the wrong key in it so I'm sure they should be able to sort it out for you.
