why is boards getting so slow? it seems to be getting slower and slower just sheer volume? almost like being back on dial-up

Well it's not just sheer volume, there's the fact that a few bits of vBulletin aren't all that scalable, meaning that if you double the resources it has you get less than a doubling in what it can handle.

The admins are constantly working to make things faster. This is one of the main things they spend the money from adverts and subscriptions on.
