On the tour of Dublin Castle you can see the original walls of Dublin down in some basement.

In our local church of ireland cathedral, there is a tunnel connecting it to the local castle apparently. Probably in case of warfare or something

The Swan would be much smaller and access is likely to be quite limited. there may be some video surveys, but nothing like the Poddle video you quoted.

According to wikipedia, there are tunnels under the M50 in Carrickmines for the preservation of the ruins of Carrickmines Castle:

I wonder if the story earlier in the week about 2 guys climbing into the sewer outside dublin castle, sparking a garda investigation, has anything to do with the OP?

Pages and pages ago someone mentioned a army fort up beside lough Swilly. Thats Dunree fort, the buildings still remain and is open to vistors. Not part of the tour is high up on the hill, the gun stands and more importantly, the entrance to a maze of tunnels. The steps leading down are fine, and the gates covering them unlocked. No idea how safe and secure it is, if someone wants to go I am game. Though I would rather see the plans of the structure beforehand. Meant to be used to store supplies and for troops to hide from air attacks, so my friend says. Where is OP? And their article/book/photos?

Also, just found this article on the tunnels under Pump Street in Derry. No idea if its still there, as the article was 2009 and the guy suggested it might collapse in 2 years, but I might ask around and see this for myself, sounds really really cool.

Two Londonderry men have told how they secretly began excavating ancient underground tunnels in the city centre - using the Apprentice Boys' parade to cover up the noise.

As a result of over three weeks' work under Pump Street, an underground network of 129 yards of red-brick and ancient stone tunnels which could pre-date the Siege by many lifetimes saw the light of day for the first time in hundreds of years.

Brian now believes that, given the different building materials used in the construction of the tunnels, that the original tunnels could actually stretch back to the time of the Kings of Ireland or beyond in the mists of pre-Christian Celtic Ireland.

thats actually very similar to what the Nazis believed would you believe. They believed the hole to the center of the earth was in tibet and a race of people from which the aryans descended lived there

Best thread ever, just spent the last hours reading the whole thing! Here's my 2 cents on the topic...

I'd love to visit the Magazine Fort - is it hard to gain entry nowadays?
I'd love to investigate the rail tunnel under the park too but the fact that trains sometimes go through it is enough to scare me off really.

I live not far from St Anne's Park so must take a nosey around and look for tunnel entrances.

Some great places abroad for underground visits are the Paris Catacombs, caving in Budapest (and a whole underground hospital under Gellert Hill) and Capadocia in Turkey which has amazing underground residences & tunnels. I've also been in a very interesting undeground place in Stockholm, we drove deep underground and it went about 8 floors down in a lift, owned by the military but part rented out to telecom companies. That city is full of underground bunkers. In Helsinki I was in an underground bunker that's so large they've a gym and indoor soccer courts in it.

Years ago I followed a tunnel (which was pretty much a drain) in Malahide castle grounds but my candle ran out and I got claustraphobic so I came out through a manhole above, only to find 3 gardeners looking at me in amusement! I think it would have led all the way to the castle (through the 'botanic' gardens area) but has been blocked up since.

People interested in tunnels etc might also like to visit the few banks in Dublin (one on Dame St ; The Mint and others) that have since been converted into pubs and have underground vaults and strong safe doors still in place.

That tunnel in Dalkey from the Loreto mentioned must be interesting but unfortunately it looks like you'd really have to trespass to get close to it. I wonder if it really goes across all the way across under the water.

A bunker was mentioned in Merrion Square - I believe it was all landscaped over - if you enter the square across the road from the Dail and then head to the far right corner you'll find a grassed over area with a suspicious lump to it, I believe that was the bunker.

Re the O'Connell St bunker, I've wondered about those 2 metal objects at the top of the street alright. I'd love to get an endescope or fibre-optic cable to look into them. Can anyone help with that?

Oh here's another one - on the platform at Seapoint DART station, there's some sort of abandoned structure which could be gained access to, it looks like it might go far in under the raised garden above it. Anyone know anything about it?

On the cliff path in Howth at a certain point on the South side of it, little would you realise that there's actually a short tunnel under the path linking someone's garden to a path right down to the beach. This is close to the end of Ceanchor Rd & The Needles if you know the area. Actually while I'm at it, further along the same path towards Sutton there's another tunnel that goes under the main path - it's like a smuggler's tunnel as at one end there's the sea and the other end there's a shallow cave where the last time I visited someone had been living. It's hard to explain where this is exactly but it's about 5 mins walk from the Red Rock martello tower.

The cellar in Dublin Castle is worth a look, it's proper old, really atmospheric, all the old exposed stonework etc.

Anyone know if it's possible to visit those old fort islands off Cork without ending up arrested?

I've also visited a few of the Martello towers on the islands off Dublin. Not underground but certainly dark & scary inside & have narrow winding stairs all the way to the top. While I'm at it, anyone know who Dalkey Island actually belongs to?

The old Cathedral in Armagh, now a COI cathedral had underground tunnels that led all the way to Mullinstown on the Monaghan road, about 2 miles away! Most of the tunnels had sunk in by the 1950's and the Army blew them up after finding IRA weapons in the late 60's

They run guided tours of Spike Island (aka Fort Westmoreland) now, think it may be summer only.

That set of steps is more a 'cut and cover' reinforced conc. passageway than a tunnel, there are what look like several ammo stores down by the little quay at the bottom of the steps with big (locked) doors sealing them off. There are open days with more scope for individual exploration than Spike, the area has been cleaned up and sanitised with handrails etc, its twin across the water (Fort Carlisle) is still out of bounds with cctv and security.

Does anyone know if the old Victorian tunnel from the Spa hotel Lucan running under the main N4 to the river still exists? It was there and photographed in the 80's but with the huge changes in the road building, was it preserved?

It was destroyed when they began building the dual carraigeway,there's no trace of it left now.
