I feel like a pretty bad, but I like her though, but I can't stay with a 14yo though can i?

She seems faily infatuated with me, maybe that's just cause of her age. I dunno how much i like her. I do think shes hot though. I take it it'll have to end?

It's funny how the law works. The government is taking it in the wrong direction, for the sake of the frothing at the mouth masses. I have always been puzzled why issues such as age of consent and anything to do with under 18s brings about such extreme and sometimes violent reactions from the public

It's even worse in North America. There was a case recently where a 15/16 year old boy was sent to jail for 10 years for receiving a blowjob from a 14 year old girl. The girl was never charged with anything.

*sigh* It will be a long long time before society matures to some decent level.

In case anyone's confused about what the Supreme Court said, its here:

    http://www.courts.ie/Judgments.nsf/AllJudgments/877F6B6773B3DCEE80257177003C6586?opendocument&COUB-6X7JAX

There was nothing about life sentences. The old system was that you were automatically guilty. The new says you can argue mistake as a defence, and hope the jury believe you.

And to the person who said a change would be unconstitutional - that's why they need a referendum. If the people vote to go back to the old system, then there'll be no defence of mistake again.

I have resently visited Ireland, and I have found that people talk about this topic too much.
Why don't you all become more like modernised continental Europe and the corruption regarding consentual laws wouud die off a little.
I would find it annoying to live in a country that didn't believe you could make a mistake about someone being 16, whether they could have abortion, the right to same sex marriage etc etc.
It is like parts of the world underdeveloped.
This personal problem is because of your goverment, and social values.

'I found myself in bizarrely similar circumstances as the OP. Saw a girl at a gig, nothing happened but got her number a few weeks later.
told me she was 17, i was 19 at the time.
went out for bout 6 weeks (didn't sleep together) and then she broke it off with me. convinced her to stay with me but then she told me the truth; that she was 14.
I didn't even believe her at first, this girl gets served in pubs no problem so it came as quite a shock. what's more i really liked her and that really really pissed me off cause suddenly my feelings were wrong.

OP you can't continue to go with out with her. When I found out the truth I made up my mind immediately. We barely even talked for a year, she said some mean things but Christ there was nothing I could do.
Still we're good friends now so it can end up ok. It's unlikely you will end up with any charges (not saying you nor I didn't break the law, we just didn't know) . After all while she was incredibly immature to lead you on like that she at least has the sense to know what she was about.

Just walk away, cut contact for now. if you want to be friends again in the future fine but always keep it strictly platonic.

Don't be too hard on yourself though, just chalk it up to experience and be more careful next time. good luck.'

Quite the incendiary topic. Just a few things I feel should be said in reply to a couple of posts:

    1. It's not that strange a scenario - it's about as likely to be as a piss take as any given PI really.

    2. 14 year old girls can be hot. We all know it. Admitting it doesn't make a person a freak, and not saying it certainly doesn't make it any less true.

    3. Yeah, we all know it's wrong too.

OP, I'd ask you two things... how exactly did you find out she was 14? And deep down, do you want to persue a long term relationship with this person? If it's really important to you, you could still maintain a romantic friendship and put the physical part aside for a few years until she's old enough. But you'd want to be seriously damn sure that you want to commit here, it's a bit of an iffy area to approach with half a heart.

When I was 23 I became friends with a 14 year girl, and over a few months things got quite emotionally involved (she was very attracted to me from the start, and I was in a pretty lonely place in my life). We eventually kissed a few times, mutually decided that we couldn't practically proceed with it, and remained friends. Except she didn't like being friends, and a rather short while later the lovely girl I'd come to implicitly trust turned into a completely different person full of rage and animosity towards me.

As it sits, you've been misled, so you can still account for your actions to others and to yourself. But anything you do from here on is with the full knowledge. So take my advise, and run like hell.

Wasn't there a big thing in the news awhile back about how "I didn't know how old she was" is no longer a defense?
No, it was the other way around.

In the past, you couldn't use "I didn't know how old s/he was" as a defence, but you can now. That's what the whole Mr A case was about. The Supreme Court found that s 1 (1) was unconstitutional because you couldn't rely on the defence of honest belief.

Edit: apologies, I didn't realise there was another page after that post!

    Just a quick question
If the gardai and the courts ever get involved, it's hardly fair if the OP gets a custodial sentance and the 14yo girl is never charged.

The law was clearly broken but since it was concensual(spelling?), aren't the girl and the OP equally at fault?

    Vey confused

That's the point - the law says if she is underage, there could not have been consent.

Hopefully the OP (and others) have learned a lesson.

No the girl is 14. That's not considered old enough for her to give her consent of her own free will therefore making it illegal.

Of course not, the difference is that it is not illegal for married people to cheat.

Haven't read through all the posts so apologies if there's any repetition here.

If you had had sex with her the first night, it would have been illegal but the chances are you'd get away with it since you're 18 and you met her in a nightclub. You could reasonably argue you thought she was 18 too.

However, if you start a relationship with her, you will lose that defence and could potentially wind up on the sex-offenders register. I doubt that's something you want at 18.

There will be other hot girls man. Tell her how it is and let her go. Who knows, in 4 years time, she might still be hot and very appreciative you didn't take advantage of her.

One way or the other, cover yourself. Let her go.

'Just check out the age of consent in other countries in Europe and then realise that they had condoms legal before 1991.
As for Ireland, it's not exactly a country that fights for individual rights with the nanny state interfering.'

Just remember the classic rule which allows you to find out '' How Low Can You Go! '' Its the PLAYGROUND RULE

    # Half you age Plus 7.

Its a simple rule which even a fourteen year old can figure out. It allows even the most succesful fourty year old get down and dirty with his twenty-seven year old gold digger girlfriend.

    So lets do maths.

    18 divided by 2 = 9
    9 Plus 7 = 16

Ergo PLAYGROUND RULE says she is under the limit.

the law was floundering between mr a being let out and kept in against ..our constitution. As it happens public opinion own out and justice in ireland was kicked in the c-nt. But what price , what price they roar from the rafters. No price. Peace of mind for some over eager parents picketing leinster house in the run up to a ''poll'' for this year election. Plus the whole thing is nasty to the senses. OP you have balls posting here. IP address is handy to retrieve, You aint anonymous. Gardai might like it unless internet cafe prints. Everyone is skirting the fact you should be given the chance to change the constitution and get posibly a little rainwater grace from ''i didnt know'', even though ignorance is no defence and its not holland. Clown. Clowno. When or if you get sent, special treatment is reserved for your conviction. Boiling water. Not a pretty sight.

    * the username of the OP smells of bulls-it. I believe he is illiciting a response rather than evoked a reaction to an actual deed. QED - Cu,t.

In any event end it before you end up in court. Tell Lolita to take a hike'

My lil cousin was 13 got pregnant by her 19 year old bloke. She was seeing him since she was 12, and she had a very developed body, everyone used to think she was her older sister's (20) big sister!

Girl's that age are like bitches in heat and they will sneak around and lie. She was never where she said she was, had secret phones, was stealing money and skiving school etc.

So it is very plausible that the OP's girl IS 14 and in a night club. She might LOOK older but she has a child's mentality and immaturity. Dump her now, before she gets serious and can turn malicious.

Also, at 14, it's not just statutory rape for full intercourse, it's doing anything sexual. So you could technically be arrested. That's what I've heard anyways. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

A guy I know is now in 4th year I think, known him for a while now. I thought he was in 5th year when he was in 2nd year and 14! He was going to clubs in town etc, he slept with a 30 year old when he was 15.

    So yea, it happens!!

She's infatuated with you because her hormones are all over the place. Stop this now.

She might brag about pulling an 18 year old guy to her school friends; you however will probably get nothing but disgust if you say you're going out with a 14 year old.

There, two reasons why you must get out now.

That is why the law has to protect them. It doesn't take an awful lot of conversation to if not be sure, certainly have doubts about a young person's stated age. Of course if someone's mind is on something else they won't be looking for signs the person is underage.

There's no real excuse and blaming the underage person is abhorrent.

By the way OP, have you seen / read Trainspotting?
[Mark has spent the previous night having sex with Diane only to realize she was an underage schoolgirl]

Diane: Well, what's the matter, Mark?
    Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: It's you that's what's wrong!
Diane: Well at least us hold hands.
Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: No, we're not holding hands!
Diane: No? But you seemed a lot more happy to do more last night. There's nothing wrong with it.
Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: Its illegal that's what's wrong with it! You know what they do to people like me in prison? They cut your balls off and flush them down the toilet.
Diane: Relax, you're not going to prison.
Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: That's very easy for you to say Diane!
Diane: Well, are you going to see me again?
    Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: No, Diane!
Diane: If you don't see me again, I'll tell the police.
Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: [turns around and stares at Diane blankly]
Diane: All right, I'll see you around then.

I know 25 year olds that have the mentality of 14 years and vice-versa. I don't think it is that simple. Plus, with drink involved in a nightclub...

under sixteen they are protected by the law
in between they are fair game
