Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Almost certainly locked. Europe and Africa share the same region, and Japan and America do likewise. I think.

Is Japan not Region 2 like Europe?

All HD-DVDs are region free. Theres no region coding in them.

Yes Japan is region 2 just like Europe. And Africa is a different region from Europe.

I've heard that the region is set by your Xbox, not the HD DVD drive. At the moment, all HD DVDs are region free anyway.

Ah, HD-DVD is region free? I was thinking of blu-ray (which I'm pretty sure puts Africa and Europe in the same region this time)

Seconded. Whats the retail on hd dvds at the moment? still €30ish?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

HMV are charging closer to 40. Not sure what the online prices are as I've not checked really, but from memory, they seem to be about 20 quid sterling which is about 30

I was going to buy one of these from Smyths at the weekend but decided against it in the end.

Is there anywhere online that I could pick one up for less than the retail of €199 here and maybe cheap movies aswell ?

has anyone tried for eg. a US HD DVD from playusa , listed as region 1 only on there site on the XboX HD DVD ...does it work?

I know it doesn't work with regular DVD's but the studios are starting to implement region coding on HD DVD's now , is its RPC2 or similiar then it will check to see what region code the player is sayign it is

I don't think so, at least not for the moment. This was released 2 months ago and last week was the first time I saw it. I went to get it today and it was gone, but luckily Smyths had one left.

As for the discs, www.avforums.com has a good trading site for second hand ones.

    Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive:

    HD-DVD - region free = yes

Regular DVD - region free = no

I have tested US HD-DVD's and they do play fine without any issues, got them from AxelMusic - slow delivery though.

Play has more titles in as well if you click on each of the genre sections.

For the moment all HD-DVD's are region free that may change with future titles though but for now no limitations are present.

Prices online are around €20 including delivery. Try amazon.com (not the uk one), play.com (usa), dvdworldusa.com. They are the cheapest and have a much greater selection as they stock all hd dvds that have been released in the states.

I have used DVDworldusa and amazon.com for buying US titles and they work fine. I dont think hd dvd will have region encoding for some time.

Try a few Smyths stores, that's where I got mine and have seen them there a few times.

Try Peats on Parnell street. Seen a few in there before crimbo.....

None in Peats or any of the Smyths I rang - anyone got any other suggestions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 826 ✭✭✭dave oc

Im gonna state the fairly obvious one's but try Game, Gamestop, Xtra Vision, HMV, maybe Argos though im not sure if they sell them.

Tried all those i'm afraid - well all city centre ones anyway and no luck.

I'd appreciate if someone did come across some stock anyplace they'd drop a post here. Other than that looks like i'm waiting for the second batch!

I was shocked to have gotten one on christmas morning from my girlfriend i heard they were even harder then the wii to get (which she also got me for christmas bless her cotton socks :) )

I asked how the hell she got one and she said she rang every shop in limerick and Ennis and she finally got one in Gamestop in Ennis. If your thinking of getting one then I would do it now not later because at the moment it comes with a free full size remote and a copy of king kong on HD DVD.

    off topic....

looks sony made yet another bad decision if this is true

    http://www.sgknox.com/2007/01/11/no-porn-on-blu-ray/

i remember one of our resident sony fanboys here on boards was giving this as a reason why blu-ray was going to win the format war ( as the porn industry had choosen blu-ray).

Quality is great on the DVD. Only have King Kong and Superman Returns, but wow! Can't wait for Serenity and Batman Begins to arrive this week.

(yay for HD Porn too. Hopefully, this will push HD DVD further as that's the format I'm backing)

You can get the hd-dvds for €20 on play.com

I had the HD-DVD drive for a day but I had to return it as after an hour of use the motor developed a serious whine. Load enough to be heard over the movie and impossible to live with.

When I took it back they had no more in stock so I got a refund. Mind you the picture quality was great although I only had the included king kong to try.

One odd thing I've noticed about the HD-DVD drive is that it shows up as having 196MB of space on it under the storage options on the Dashboard.
