A new cinema showing independent/foreign films would be a good idea, something like the Lighthouse Cinema in Dublin.

The Cinema in Dundalk isn't bad, I've been in worse, It's not as modern as some but the basics are right.

    We can but dream...

As a Canuck living in Dundalk for 15 years, I never thought I'd see the day when there was an ice rink and regular (ice) hockey. :D

The Film Club at the Town Hall is good in the meantime though, for indie and foreign and arthouse films. And of course having a decent system at home helps when watching DVD's.

But 'tis true, a cinema as proposed above would be great. I don't mind going to Dublin to the Lighthouse (going this Sat. to see the Lemon Tree at 2.15) or the IFI but I'd much rather just walk to a local cinema. :)

Management  2/5 grumpy and won't listen to customer

I'm very surprised to hear that. I know the manager - Niall. i worked with him before. He's an absolute gentleman, a very nice chap. He was well liked where we worked, I never saw him grumpy ever. He must've been having a really really bad day.

:) had a quick look at the planning pages.. somewhere beside JJB it seems, 10 cinemas with cafe and parking.. finnabair applied for the permission but i wonder who will be running it.. uci?? or another imc? Finnabair did the retail park and they all leased to other retailers... i presume it'll be the same for this?

I've heard that there is a bowling ally going in also as part of Phase 2 of the development along with the cinema. It's about time we started getting facilities into the town. There was nothing in the town up until 5 years ago now we have facilities that are the envy of most towns. JJB soccerdome, Icedome, race track just to name a few.

Planning permission has been granted for a new ten-screen multi million euro cinema in Dundalk.

The new movie house, which could house 1,800 movie goers, will be located right beside the Dundalk Ice Dome, just off the Inner Relief Road. Along with

this, a new ‘VIP’ cafe will be built inside the complex.

Currently there is no operator in place to put their name on the project but a deal should be finalised within the next two weeks with rumours circulating that it could go to the popular iMax franchise which is known for its moving seats during action films.

Imax would be great as we would have the only one on the island. Used to be one in the Odessy in Belfast but it closed last year. It's good to see more investment going into the town

If you readlast weeks Argus or Democrat you would know that the developers got the go ahead for a new 10 screen cinea in Dundalk besides JJB. Not a rumor, its fact.

Also there is speculation that up to 5 of the 10 screens will be dedicated to the 'Adult Film Industry' which considering the estates near by, will be a great distraction and is guranteed to make money

In relation to the estates I think this would just mean more annoying teenagers than what you usually have to suffer in the IMC. It still not known if the IMC will close but I hope it doesn't, because the one besides JJB would just be to far of a spin out.

 How's that? There's free porn galore on the interwebs. (That's what I've heard anyway.)

Se being on the dole or claiming other benefits wont cover the cost of a new laptop or computer, it will however cover the cost of a cinema ticket....See how that works??

And yes, the internet has lots of porn:cool:

What on earth is this meant to mean. A great distraction??

So everyone in the surrounding estates is on the dole or claiming benefits?? You are some muppet if you believe that.

It means that it will give them something to do, there are only so many laps of the estate or the town you can do with a toddler and while pushing a pram, especially when your 19.

So the cinema will definately break up there day

You could always go to the surrounding estates and see for yourself. I used to be a collector for a local furniture comapny and believe me its benefits city. granted its not a fair assumption that everyone is on the dole in those areas. But the majority are, and apologies to anyone from the area who is a honest hard working tax payer

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,838 ✭✭✭doncarlos

Well lets leave aside estates like Bay Estate, Avendale, Seafield Lawns, Blakeley close, Kingswood which are all private estates i'm assuming you are talking specificly about Muirhevana Mór. Yes of course there are people on benefits in MMór but to suggest that 51% (Majority) are is propostorous. I know quite a lot of people from this that estate and all are "honest hard working tax payers"

    Apologies for going off topic.

I honestly think you should retract those slurs against the estates in the area. Totally stereo-typing. I haven't before come across such insulting comments on the Louth boards before.
Would you agree that all collectors for companies are glorified thugs who extort money from unfortunates no matter what? Of course not and certainly that statement is untrue. However, that's the type of attitude you have towards people in the surrounding estates.
    Shame on you.

Where did you hear this rumour?I reckon you made that up, wishful thinking:rolleyes:

These statements only cement my belief derived from an earlier thread about O'Fiaich College that you have a serious ideological dislike/hatred of the working class and those less fortunate than you. Your comments are indeed disgraceful and people should pay them no heed.

Ok I was getting a lift out to JJB with one of my mates and he was saying that there is rumour that a new cinema opening beside JJB and im just wondering has heard anything like this or is it just bull?

That is a rumor for a while now but today planning permission has been granted for an 1,800 seater cinema that will be fully digital (one of the first in ireland mind you) his is great news because the developers (Finnabair Estates) say that 200 jobs will be created during construction and they aim to employ as many local with that have the skills required !

Hope that they have a different distributor than IMC, as how many good films have we missed out on due to their dispute (departed etc)

Dundalk is set to get ten digital cinema screens with the announcement that the 'Movies @' group have signed up to be the operator of the new complex.
The cinema, which the Dundalk Democrat revealed details about three weeks ago, will cost p12m to build at Dundalk Retail Park in the Finnabair Estates.

Movies @ Dundalk Ltd, as it will be known, will have 1,800 seats, ten screens and will be a haven for film fans. Along with this, the complex will offer a 'ticketless' purchasing system and it will be fully digital, making Dundalk one of the first towns in Ireland to avail of this technology.

Hugh Quinn, Property Manager for Finnabair Estates, said:"We are delighted to bring Dundalk into the digital age and to contribute to the roll-out of digital cinema throughout Ireland. Not only will it greatly enhance the town's fantastic leisure and retail offering as the only film venue in the region to offer a 100% digital format, the development of this project will provide a much needed jobs boost to the Dundalk."

It is expected that up to 200 jobs will be created during construction, with a further 30 new jobs on offer when the cinema opens and the company has indicated an intention to allocate jobs, where at all possible, to local people within the town
