Opinion on a scope

Have been browsing through some scopes online,
Was not sure to buy from a gun shop locally
    or to buy online.

(I am willing to spend upto 300 Euro but I want to buy
    new and not second hand)

Was thinking of buying this scope:
    Hawke Target 10-40x50 AO
    http://www.opticswarehouse.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=HT104050&cat=88
    It seems cheap/good value.

Anone got any opinions on this one or suggest something better
    for (eventually) shooting at 200m.

I also dont know what kind of mounts I would get if its to go on
    a CZ452. (.17HMR)

I know most newbies make the mistake of getting a scope with a real
high mag as they think its important and I am going to make the
exact same mistake. I have used a 16X scope and I know
its not going to keep me happy. I want something I can use at 200m.
I can always adjust the mag Down if needed.

Have heard on high mag ajustable scopes on cheap ones that
often work fine at lower mags but when you increase it they dont
work so great or the parallax kicks in even if you can adjust it.

Its mill-dot so hopefully thats not a problem legal-wise.
I reckon I would like mildot as for .17 even a slight wind can
effect the round so it may be handy. But I have heard/read reviews
with people testing out rifles saying they did not recommend the mildot
    reticle.

I bought three scopes on the internet from E-bay and never had any problems with the internet purchases. All arrived promptly from U.S.A. and I didn't have to pay any duty, which was a bonus.

The first scope was a Simmons Pro Hunter, 3-9 X 50, which is an excellent scope with very clear optics. Cost including p.& p. €49.90

The second scope was a Simmons White Tail Classic, 6-20 X 50, also an excellent scope with very clear optics. Cost including p.& p. €99.90 in a clear out sale.

The third scope was a Mueller Eradicator, illuminated mildot, 6.5-25 X 50, which is an excellent scope with exceptionally clear optics. Cost including p.& p. €199.90.

My friend shoots with a Smidht & Bender and the clarity of the Simmons WTC or Eradicator is nearly as good except at dawn or dusk. The S&B has exceptional light gatherng capabilities at dawn & dusk.

As you can see there is excellent value to be got out there if you search in the right places. On the internet I would only buy new and from a shop, not private or second-hand ........ you never know why somebody is trying to get rid of a scope.

There is a problem now buying any firearms related articles, particularily scopes, from the U.S. since 9-11 so you may have to limit your search to U.K. & Ireland.

I have purchased rifle straps, bipods, mounts and sunshades from Optics warehouse and have found them excellent to deal with and very competitively priced.

I looked through a Hawke scope before (not the model you mention) and it appeared to be cloudy and hazy.

Before purchasing any scope on internet I would go to a gunshop here and look through that particular model to see what the optics are like. Then when you order you know exactly what to expect and are not buying on spec. ...Also, while in the shop look through some Smidht & Bender or similarily priced scope just to see what excellent clarity is available and compare it to the cheaper model you are looking through.

I know this is a bit long winded but I hope it's of some use to you.

    Sound thanks,

I was concerned that the shops here may not offer the same variety
if I was looking for something around a 20-25x mag. I got the feeling the
the majority would be 3-9x or up to 16x

I have the same White Tail Classic on my .22wmr - I'm thinking about getting rid of the Leupold on the other rifle and getting one of the higher end Simmons.
I'm happy with the 6.5x20 mag - don't think I'd need any more for a 22 or 17 for that matter. I rarely take a shot at the higher mags because it's a bollocks if you need a follow up or if there's other bunnies around.

I got the Burris Signature Zee Rings from Eric Brooks - with the full set of inserts - found them tricky to set up but never a bother with them after and I have loads of adjustment.
You'll need the Weaver Mount Adapters as well if you go that route.

I have that exact scope for sale if you interested but I know your looking to go new. 12 monts old and in perfect nick. Comes with flip open covers. I bought a new scope just before christmass. I used it on my .223 and have shot out to 300m with it no probs. Didnt get a huge amount of use in 2006 so its practically new.

Thanks for the offer. Am mainly doing a bit of research before I buy
as it may be a few weeks away yet but I reckon I will still buy new though.
Good to know the people on this board are Helpful! :-)

(Got this Horrid Habit of having to have everything new even when I see
bargins and am a terrible impulse buyer when it comes to new shiny
    gizmos and gadgets)

    Another vote for the mueller!

Just bought the APV 4.5-14 it hasnt arrived yet but as was said supposed to have great optics and cant beat the price at 120 euros.

If this meet up thing goes ahead ill prob go along you can have a look through.

I'm putting it on a .17hmr as well but its a hunting rifle so my mag will be kept at x6 up to 100yards and maybe x10 after that. I know for target shooting people prefer more. Eradicator has got alot of very good reviews so id give it a look.

Would love to do the meet up thing. I dont drive though so my only lift
is with a shooting buddy so it would depend on if he was free whenever
    it would take place.

I joined midlands so am waiting on membership ID as the Local Garda
does not want to know me until I have this and a Locker installed.
Its a 452 varmint I ordered but I did this over the phone so I am hopeing
and praying that what comes in IS actually the free floating heavy barrell and
not just another model of the 452.

If there are other people that have .17's we may eventually be able
to organize some sort of shoot/leagues/competitions like the have for .22
(not too soon though I gotta learn the ropes first)

    Am Living down south.
I looked a Leupold very expensive but I guess you get what you pay for
even looking at them they look like quality stuff.
