The second phase of the 2002 scheme was started last year but bar the schemes that got the off in Roscomon Kerry Clare and Donegal last spring it is now dead in the water , some more schemes got the off in 2005 but none of the 2005 schemes like Meath/Galway/Wicklow are finished either.

Dempsey only got enough money to finish the schemes that were contracted out so there will be no more tenders this year either.

    See the problem here

    http://www.etenders.gov.ie/search/Search_MainPageAdv.aspx#

key word " Broadband " and partial match

    all locations

    published 01/01/2006 to 10/01/2007

    then

    published 01/01/2005 to 01/01/2006

    search expired

Nothing has gone to tender since last June because there is no more money. Thats something for your local ff yahoos when they come around. Plan, what plan ???? there is no money to install any more fibre anywhere.

To make it worse, it also appears that you may now only benefit from the service if within 50m of the fibre. So sez the CEO of eNet here
, the economics of digging fibre means that only businesses that are within 50m of the MANs and that have a telecoms spend of over €1,000 per month can afford a direct connection.

he wants Dempseys money that Dempsey does not have so they are 'in discussion' and will continue to be :(
eNet is currently in discussion with the Government to look at “creative ways to resolve the last 25 metres issue” and make MANs more widely available to SMEs

    que caca :(

I'm still suprised that anyone thinks that pulling fibre to every house is a good idea (you're usually looking at around 3k per household for around 100 households on a 1km road with 1 connection) economically if you want to spread broadband. The way you should set it up is the same way most other network provider does it, fibreback bone and a DSL network connected to it (but god forbid that Eircom would be unbundled and have someone competent to own the copper network!). The state/local county owns the fibre ring and sell access to any provider that meets the criteria(s) set, basically a black fibre setup with out installation costs for the hiring company.

Forgot Cork. That tender went out in 2005 as well

    http://www.etenders.gov.ie/search/search_show.aspx?ID=OCT046299

Limerick is dead in the water I do know. They were supposed to tender in 2006 before the plug was pulled. Mayo and Wexford same.

Note that this Broadband project has been pimped and launched and announced and relaunched for 7 years now .

Noel Teacy was minister of state for technobabble in 2000 he made this speech in 2000

Address by Mr Noel Treacy TD Minister for Science, Technology and Commerce At the launch of e-Business Masterclasses At 1 pm on 29th September 2000 In the Great Southern Hotel, Eyre Square, Galway.
In a further initiative, the Government has ensured that the benefits of the information age will be made available to all citizens, by rolling out broadband fibre optic cable to over 120 towns, touching on 21 counties. This roll out is due to be completed by 31 December of this year.

In 2007 many of these 120 towns have no fibre and no funds to install fibre and no tender to install the fibre. Nor will they have any fibre for years. Dempsey only got €10m extra this year for his national universal broadband great plan which is the fund that pays for MANs .

(they added a few more towns where civil service decentralisation is planned since making it about 140/150 towns to be fibred up now by end 2007 maybe 70 will be in place )
