buying a used car - grateful for any advice

Hi All,

At the moment I drive a 1998 1.9 peugeot 306. I want to get rid as I don't really need the petrol costs of a 1.9, and the peugeot parts are quite expensive.
I want to spend approx €6,000 on a used car - engine size, no more than a 1.6.

Any suggestions on inexpensive, reliable cars??

Are you sure it's a 1.9? AFAIK, the only 1.9 available in that car was diesel?

I thought I was asking a fairly straight forward question. And I thought that there would be a bunch of men (and woman!) dying to help a lady in distress!?

Buy a Japanese one that looks nice.

What year of car you looking for?
Need four doors or less?
What will it be used for primaraly? ,ie need storage space?
What kind of miles will you be doing?

anything newer than a 1998
doesn't matter on how many doors - just mainly me sitting in it.
used for personal use - mainly at weekends.
I don't clock up many miles.
but I do like to drive.
I don't want a very small car - been there, done that, years ago.

put is this way - if I could afford it, I would drive an Audi A3. I'd be very happy with a golf!

but I can't afford them...

You could pick your self up a very tidy 2003 maybe a 2004 fiat punto for that money. But you said you don't want a small car so..

A 1998, 1999 ford focus might be within your grasp maybe a 2000 if you are prepared to buy priavtley and haggle. They are a solid car and a class leader in reliabilty stakes for that size car.

Edit: Don't be afraid to walk away if you think you can get a better deal. This is the best time in years to be buying a used car so haggle accordingly!

Your 306 isn't a 1.9 petrol unless it got a 205 gti engine transplant!
It's kind of important information, as we'd then know roughly how to compare what we'd recommend against what you have.

No hassle... but I do recommend the MX5's. I admit to finding them fairly girley looking alright, but you being a girl should look the part in it. It's the type of car every male car enthusiast wants their girlfriend to get so they can have a blast in it! Very well balanced excellent car to drive. But find a mechanic to check it before buying, they're very reliable, but you don't want one that has been thrashed.
It'll loose no more money than the golf will on you either.

That Golf and Bora are overpriced. €6k for an 8 year old Golf/Bora is crazy money. There are alot nicer cars out there for that sort of money.

I have to say I really don't like the Hyundai Coupe (hairdressers car!)
not sure about the Puma or Tigra.

But I have thought about the Megane Coupe - that's been on my list of maybe's for a while.

And yes - I'm from Dublin.
