One of my friends is entitled to rent allowance as well as his disability allowance and is considering moving in with another friend who has a two bed apartment in ashbourne. Ashbourne is in meath but rents are quite higher than in other parts of meath and more like rents in dublin but the rent allowance is much lower in meath than in dublin. do the social welfare take this into account when deciding how much a person is entitled to?

For a single person in shared accomodation, the normal rent allowance is Euro 70 per week (Meath, Cavan, Monaghan and Louth are on this level- Dublin is Euro 98 per week). This is non-negotiatable, however your friend may also be entitled to a rent-supplement, payable by the HSE Community Officer, to ensure that their after rent income does not fall below a certain pre-determined threshold.

This document should be of help.
