    =====================
    The need to extend city boundary is unanimously agreed
    By Naoise O' Donovan Coogan

    Members of Kilkenny Borough Council agreed on Monday night last that there was a very real need to extend the Kilkenny city boundary to include housing estates that are considered to be located in the county council area.

    Many of these residential areas are within walking distance of the city and people who reside in the estates believe that they are living in the city when the reality is they are residing outside the city boundary.

    Cllr John Coonan (FF) raised the issue at Monday's meeting and he received full support for his motion to progress the consultation process of the extension of Kilkenny city borough boundary.

    "The last extension was before the famine in the 1800s and there is no argument that there needs to be a revised boundary for the city residents as the present boundary does not reflect the city. Estates such as Larchfield, Loughboy and Ardnore are all considered county estates although anyone who lives there would think that they were city residents. This causes confusion in many situations such as refuse collection. It is time that the boundary extension was extended for once and for all to reflect the modern city of Kilkenny."

    Cllr Coonan added that the process would not be an easy one and the best way to reach agreement on the issue was to establish a working committee which could begin to work on the process.

    "All of us within the county want to reflect after 200 years where our city has gone. If we set up a working group that will take all sides into consideration, we will move this forward in a positive manner. This could be very positive for Kilkenny. It will mean the merging of certain services and with this streamlining of services should come a higher quality of service. Some services are already jointly managed and they are working very well to date. This is not a simple plan. We will need to make some hard decisions and we need to be bold and make them and reflect modern life in Kilkenny. We are supposed to be a city - a city with officially only 8,000 residents if you go by the borough boundary. There are more people living between the borough boundary and the ring road than are living within the original boundary and this is not right," he said.

    Several of the city councillors claimed that their homes were partly in the city and partly in the county council jurisdiction which makes a nonsense of the out-dated boundaries of a different era.

    However, the boundary debacle will not go unopposed by members of the county council as it also has a large bearing on politics in the county. Many county councillors enjoy the votes of city dwellers as a result of the county boundary location and they will not be prepared to give up their votes, particularly in a pre-election climate.

    So it is OK for Kilkenny Borough Council to feel the need to extend their boundary into Co Kilkenny... but think it is Nazi Like that Waterford City council want to do the same.

    Fair point but the KK boundary is an enigma compared to Waterford cities; it dates from famine times, Waterford's most recent is from the 1980s as I know??

    But does it matter how often boundaries are changed.. or how long has lapsed since the last one... as long as the change reflects how society and cities are today not what it was 30,60,100 or 1000 years ago. After all this is a new Century and a lot of us here now were not alive since the last boundary change happened.

    How long as it been since the Waterford boundary was extended north though, 80 years? And not again until hell freezes over (let alone after another famine) if some get their way.

    Still I really feel for all those poor Co. Kilkenny dwellers. They'll go to be bed rural dwellers some night and wake up the next morning in the big city. Oh the horror! :eek:

    It's nothing short of Nazis looking for Lebensraum!!! :D Not since the Anschluß of poor Austria has the like of it been done! Will there be any of Co. Kilkenny left at all by the end of all these land grabs and hostile takeovers? How will this affect hurling, the only thing that matters?

    Wait till the loyalists of South Kilkenny march up to the city along their traditional route and the Reverend Dick Dowling goes in there guns blazing! Then we'll see how far these land grap, Nazi tactics get! :D

    I reckon Waterford CoCo should just up and be done with it and annex the entire N9 corridor as far as the Carlow border. Then at least they'd be responsible for it's upkeep and maintenance, something that KK obviously couldn't be arsed doing.

    (ducks head and awaits incoming sliotars :D )
