Well Ned, if it's any consolation, I can see your point. But there's only so long you can talk to a brick wall for, so I'd just walk away now, while uve still got ur sanity.
Remember though, it's only the internet. Not worth stressing.
    Good luck to you.

If you'll excuse me, I'd like to try and get this thread back on topic.
How can we encourage more new assholes to post how they think boards should be run? These people are vital for my entertainment and certainly add value to the Feedback forum.

I have stated many times before that I do not inform a user that they are banned. The reason I don't is that if a user manages to avoid reading the many Charters I have written and still manages to get themselves banned then they deserve to be confused and bewildered by being unable to access to the forum in question. If they send me a polite pm asking why they were banned then I will politely explain why. If they send me an angry, petulant pm demanding their Internet Freedom of Speech Rights to be upheld I will respond with sarcasm or just plain ignore them.

Boards.ie is not run to cater for the lowest common denominator, it is here to provide civil discussion on many different topics. There is a requirement from all users to understand the rules of whatever forum they post in. If they do not, they fail this most simple of tests. Boards has no obligation to the stupid.

Stop banning people for trolling the feedback forum IMO.

I'm going to be honest and say I haven't read all the charters of fora I've posted in, therefore, I don't know the rules.
From the top of my head, the only charters I've bothered reading are those for AH, Politics and Islam, perhaps I have read the History one, I can't remember. But I haven't been banned, because what you really need is not some list of right vs wrong, just common sense. The only people the charters probably serve, 90% of the time, is those with no common sense.

I really doubt that you guys who are suggesting that if you don't read the charter you are stupid have even read the charters yourselves.
I would say, that with the exception of very contentious places like Politics, most of us do not loyally read the charters before we post, nor is there a great need to.

If I regularly post to a forum I read the charter. Why? Because there maybe things I should know before I post there. I don't like getting banned. If you do get banned and come to Feedback to whinge about it, or like ned78 come to the conclusion that it's not you, it's the system that's wrong, then you display a distinct lack of intelligence. If you complain that you didn't read the charter and do the above then you are complete base moron and deserve nothing but contempt.

Right, and I'm not actually agreeing with the OP here, if the system isn't broken, it doesn't need to be fixed. But I think you could replace 90% of charters with "HAVE COMMON SENSE. OR ELSE." and still not effect the number of bannings. But you seem to be reading misbehaviour as a problem of not reading the charter.
if a user manages to avoid reading the many Charters I have written and still manages to get themselves banned then they deserve to be confused and bewildered by being unable to access to the forum in question.

Just change your second quote to read 'If they do not and get banned, they fail this most simple of tests.' and I think we're done here.

That is unless one of boards.ie's rebels without a clue wants to have another pop.

I think you're right 90% of the time. Some forums will obviously have specific local rules for specific local reasons - fail to read the charter and you'll completely miss these and then fall back on using your own common sense (your internet common sense might be as good as mine, better or worse). Accusing someone on-thread of trolling in Politics is slap on the wrist territory for example, it isn't in other places. Being a retarded muppet is obviously a no-no there as well but obviously that's covered by the common sense where it prevails rule. What constitutes a retarded muppet may differ locally though. it's a good idea to read forum charters, particularly if you intend posting more than once (given that failure to read the thing may result in posting only once and that post may well be deleted).

It's the other 10% that is the cause of many of the bannings in the first place though. I'm sure there are lots of users with reasonably high post counts who have never had a local ban from any forum but either they're quite polite or just lucky. I've never had a local ban. I'm just lucky.

Actually I get what InFront is saying here. He's not saying it *terrifically* well but what he is saying is pretty much right.

Most people dont read the charters because the charters contain stuff like "dont be a dick".
Most people arent dicks so they never realise they were "constrained" by such a rule.
Hence most people get along just fine without reading the charter. Amps point is that preferably they would because it might contain stuff they could trip over. (by the way, Amp is quite capable of making coherent arguments, he just doesnt with people he thinks just want to fight the power and posts at their level in those cases. Oh noe! :)).

    To the OP:
Believe it or not we had a long and quite involved review of the Mod Best Practise recently with many different points of view being put forward and with some minor alterations we've left things as they are. Thats not to say they might not change in the future but by and large things are just fine in our opinion.

The problem comes down to this: If we set rules we will have rules lawyers arguing the "law" and nit picking. If we dont set rules we rely on the common sense of the mods and our ability to pick good ones and manage them. We choose the latter.

Can I ask the OP a question: When you go to dinner party, does the host hand you a list of things that if you breach they will ask you to leave?

    DeV.

Indeed. There are some key myths about moderators that are constantly assumed by some users:

    1. Moderators like banning people.
This isn't true, we don't like doing this. It requires effort. Not very much effort but more effort than not banning someone.

    2. Moderators are power hungry.
The Admins generally don't pick someone to mod if the only reason they want to become a mod is to gain power. When someone is selected they soon find out that, apart from ample supplies of coke and hookers, being a mod is very different to what users think it is. We're just users that are trusted to do keep the peace.

    3. Moderators have enormous cocks.
    This is entirely true.

    Well said that man! lolz

The "Common Sense" rule doesn't work on web fora. I've seen plenty of places (this one included) trying it out for a while and the sad reality is, you can't trust the general public to not be retarded. These are the facts I'm afraid. A person can be smart and rational, people aren't. We would get too many "you never said I couldn't post this link to porn/warez/Emm See Dee on this board!" muppets. Now thankfully, we don't have massive lists of things that you can't talk about (I guess because we pretty much have a board for everything), but the general rules are nothing illegal and nothing in the public fora that isn't viewable by anyone of any age in any place. It might seem like such a simple little list of rules, but people refuse to listen to it and don't seem to care about getting themselves or the nice people who have set up and maintained this site for them into serious legal trouble.

In the end, there will always be arseholes. You, the users are the first line of defence in the war on arseholes (we, the mods are the second line). You should punch arseholes in the face when you meet them on the street. Tell them you refuse to live in a world with arseholes like them. Tell them to READ THE F00KING CHARTERS!!! :D We must all fight the good fight. If you get benned from a page on the internet, your life will continue and you should not get upset about it (annoyed is acceptable, but only if it's with yourself for being a moron in the first place).

    That is all.

    Update begins.... ;)

See, there's three kinds of people: dicks, pussies, and assholes. Pussies think everyone can get along, and dicks just want to fúck all the time without thinking it through. But then you got your assholes, kharn. And all the assholes want us to sh1t all over everything! So, pussies may get mad at dicks once in a while, because pussies get fúcked by dicks. But dicks also fúck assholes, Kharn. And if they didn't fúck the assholes, you know what you'd get? You'd get your dick and your pussy all covered in sh1t!
