domain name question

guys would appreciate some feedback as currently trying to understand something have checked the IEDR policy on their website but am not really any the wiser :mad:

am i correct in thinking when registering a .ie domain name that if your not a sole trader , registered business , community , government dept etc that you can only register a personal name

for example: if my name was john smith as a private individual i would only be entitled to register johnsmith.ie or some variant of that name otherwise i'm not able to register any other domain name

am i right in thinking this? thanks in advance

Yup, you do need to prove that you're entitled to the name via some official document (CRO, VAT number, whatever).

I didn't even know you could register a personal name!

thought as much , so does anyone know what would happen if a domain is registered under a business name that doesnt exist in any format according to the CRO????

The IEDR rules (as shown on their site) aren't exactly user friendly

Under the basic rules you cannot register yourname.ie

You would need to register something like mjn1.ie - even though that may seem really silly

It is a LOT easier to register .ie domains if you have a registered business name, however there is nothing to stop you from trying to register a .ie for personal (non business / profit) use.
