Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What programs have you running at startup? Have you run an anti spyware scan?

I mean all the ones that came with the laptop, not ones that i've installed myself. I have a hp pavilion dv5000 laptop, im just downloaded spybot search and destroy, is that programm any good?

Try downloading hijackthis and posting up your log here, some of us will have a gawk at it for you. It will give us an idea about what programs you have running. Spybot Search and Destroy is good but give AVG Anti Spyware a go also as it might pick out other things that might not be detected.

You have two firewalls (eTrust and Zone Alarm) running. You should only have one. Probably not the cause of your problem, but definately something to sort out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

The log looks clean at a first glance, as aidan mentioned, one firewall is normally enough to have running. Did you try defragmentation? How much RAM have you got anyway, just wondering?

If it's a Dell (although it look like a HP from above), it could be a BIOS setting. Make sure that in the BIOS, your processor setting is not set to ''compatible''. The other variable is normal I think, its ages since I used that PC, but there's only two options. I had been fiddling with it and changed it not thinking it'd do any harm and it caused exactly the same symptoms.

If it's not a Dell try something similar, only thing I can think of.

defragmented it, and nothin changed really, its still slow, im not sure how much RAM i have, how do i check??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

Right click on My Computer->Properties and it will tell you in the General tab along with processor details. I'm a bit stumped on this one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

No obvious spyware there however.. you have CA crap installed... more importantly.. Pestpatrol! Not only is this absolure rubbish, its a serious resourse hog!!
go to start run and type services.msc
find the pestpatrol servce (ppremote or something like that) and stop/dissable it. see if it improves.

also see if anything is hogging your cpu in task manager (ctrl-alt-del).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,561 ✭✭✭Duff

I have 896mb of ram, im going to try what saruman said now.
Thanks for the help guys, appreciate it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,561 ✭✭✭Duff

Cant find pestpatrol in services.msc cant even find anything resembling that name!?

EDIT: Also, what am i looking for to delete in task manager?

Download this http://www.ccleaner.com/download/ it worked wonders for me the other day with same problem as you described

Try Start->Run->msconfig.exe in the box and then Ok. Look under the Startup tab for Pestcontrol, and untick the box beside it.

Its still as slow as it was before, its really frustrating!!..would re-booting the system be any good, would i lose all my files if i did??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

Do you mean reformatting the system (clearing the data and reinstalling windows)? You will loose the data, so if you want to do so then back up the files you want to keep. Rebooting the system means to power off and on again. It might help, only really needed if you download and install a lot of programs often.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,824 ✭✭✭RoyalMarine

formatting ( removing windows and everything else on your computer)
would probably fix the job almost guaranteed.
99% sure on it. rare occasions it doesnt then at least you know its something wrong with the hardware...

but yes, you would loose all your files. if you have a cd writer, then you can copy everything you want to a c.d
if not, then its your choice really.

when's the last time you made a system restore point?
usually when windows xp is installed system restore will make restore points every time you change something that windowsa conciders a risk.

check when the last time a restore point was made. if its only a few days ago, and since the problem only started happening lately, it should revert what ever caused the problem.

click start, go to prorams, go to accessories, go to the folder ststem tools, and go into the program system restore.

this will bring up a new program.
on the right, you will have 2 options.

restore your computer to a previous state,
    or create a restore point.

select restore your computer to a previous state,
    and click next.

the next page will show you a callendar on the left. the dark blue dates, are the dates that your computer made restore points. and when you click on these dates, it tells you on the right, in the box beside exactly why ansd what was done for windows to create a restore point.

this might help you find your problem without restoring anything!
go back a few days and look what went on.

    if you cant understand it,
then simply restore it to a day of your choice.

what this will do, is reverse your computer back to the exact state it was in when the computer made the point.

    theoritically fixing your problem....

good luck with it, let us know what happens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,561 ✭✭✭Duff

Thanks guys your help is greatly appreciated!

The last time i made a restore point was the end of November!!..If I restore my computer back to that point will I still have my reccently downloaded files i.e songs i got on limewire etc?

    Thanks again!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,998 ✭✭✭✭Cuddlesworth

Before you format, rigth click on my computer, click on manage.

In the top left, there should be system tools-->event veiwer----> system

Open system, are there hundreds of errors saying bad block with a big warning symbol?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,561 ✭✭✭Duff

Yep there are LOADS of error and warning ones!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,998 ✭✭✭✭Cuddlesworth

Simply put, your hard-drive is dying a slow death(bit peeved I didn't see this sooner). A format might fix it(it scans and removes bad blocks from the filetable), but I would recommend backing up data straight away and replacing it.

The slowness is caused by the Windows Os constantly trying to recover corrupted files and place them elsewhere.

How would I go about doing this?
Sorry i'm a bit slow when it comes to computers!:o

If you have a CD burner, burn all the files you want to keep to a disc. If you have a USB pen drive, copy all the files you want to that.

Basically, just copy the files somewhere else.
