IBB and BitTorrent - throttling ?

    HI all,
I've had my BitTorrent machine out of action for about a 2 weeks (it's Ubuntu Linux and KTorrent), as I was doing up the room it's in.

Anyhow - I've reconnected and I'm getting terrible download speeds - on torrents with 100+ seeders.

I was getting around 200K on average before, now it's terrible - jumping between 1 and 20 most of the time

Is anyone else seeing this ? Or maybe it's just my setup.. (Yes - I have port forwarded the correct ports)

It looks like IBB may be throttling BT....I could be wrong and may just need to try a few different ports.

hey, I'm pretty sure they are! A few weeks ago they did an update and I can't get the speeds that I was getting before. Now things with 100's of seeders come in below 20. Never use to do that.

I called IBB and they said they haven't done anything but that bittorrent is not allowed, anyway you know they did!

How can BitTorrent not be allowed ?

Illegal downloads are not allowed, but how can they stop you from downloading legal torrents ?

A ISP can't tell the difference when it's inbound and it is a broadband hog (in general). Between the two they usually have enough reasons to say no to torrents.

I've been playing around with it and I'm getting terrible speeds.

The exact same thing is happening me.. i was downloading something in divx format earlier and it had a swarm speed of over 1000kbps and an avg of 150kbps and i was only getting 15 :( .

Now this is where it gets strange.. downloading something from the new azureus program zudeo (legal vid downloads hd trailers etc) i am getting close to 100kbps and it has exceeded that speed... i find this very very strange.. im getting excellent speeds from these totally legal downloads which are using the same protocol as the other thing i was downloading earlier.. is it possible that they are running some really advanced traffic shaping that can discriminate between different content? example cap divx encoeded avi files(most movies tv shows etc) but give good speed to other video files?

This is really weird.. does anyone reading have any good knowledge of traffic shaping? is what i said above possible and implemented by isps?

Just to try it out i would say other people should install zudeo and post back here the speeds you get... if its just me fine but if its more people too....

I've just checked mine. I'm pretty much running at 300Kb/s for my linux ISOs using my torrent app.

legal vid downloads hd trailers etc
No more so than YouTube is. Its user driven content, not peer-reviewed by Zuedo.

    On IBB ?

What app/os are you using ?

Can you post a link to the torrent so I can test ?

    (Sorry for all the questions!)

    1: Yes. Breeze 3Mb.
2: I use Torrentflux on Redhat.
3: No. You'll understand why :). I've been downloading for a large part of the evening and I haven't noticed anything weird. I've been using various torrents from torrentspy. I don't normally get full speed from one torrent but when I've got 3 or 4 going at a time my link normally maxes out.

OK - here's all my settings (all ports have been forwarded on the router also).

You can see they type of speeds I'm getting. Anybody got any suggestions ???

I can't see anything wrong there but I've a few points.

1: You've got 3 ports listed in those settings. I presume whatever firewall you're using in Ubuntu is allowing those 3 ports in. I'm also presuming you've port forwarded those ports on your router to your PC. If you have has your PC changed it's IP at all recently.

2: I tried Ktorrent too. I couldn't get good speeds on it with settings that appeared to work on other programs. That was just me though. I didn't investigate too much as I wanted a headless client anyway. Try downloading something like rtorrent and have a look to see if you get any better speeds using the same settings.

3: Maybe try something like Shields up. I think this should try and connect to your machine to see if the ports are open https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
I can't try it from here as I'm in work but I'd imagine if your KTorrent was on and the ports were open that that site should show the ports as open.

Edit. Here's another one (http://www.t1shopper.com/tools/port-scanner). I've done a port scan on my machine and got

    Port Scan XX.XX.XX.XX

    Wed, 24 Jan 2007 03:41:27 -0800

The host XX.XX.XX.XX has a service running on port 60006 ().

So I know it does show open and listening torrent ports.

    Very strange...

I killed KTorrent and ran the tests. (Same results with KTorrent running BTW)

It loks like the ports aren't open....

I upgraded Ubuntu recently - could there be a Firewall running that I'm not aware of now ?

Here's the results and a pic of my port forwarding on the router:
    ports14tm.gif

    ports27kt.gif

Here's a process list - anybody recognise a firewall here:

I've no idea about that. You'll need to read up on configuring IPTables in Ubuntu I think.

The port should only be listening with the app turned on. You won't get a result from those tests ever, if the app is off. To rule out IBB and your router, have you got a second machine. You could try connecting to the TCP ports of your Ubuntu machine by typing telnet internal-ip-address portnumber so for my machine on my internal network with my torrent program running I'd type telnet 10.1.1.1 60001
If you get a message saying you can't connect then there's a problem. You should just get a blank screen with no error.

OK - will try that from the PC at home.

Does it matter if there are downloads running at the time ?

    I don't think so.

use utorrent or azereus with protocol encryption on using a random high port (i usually pick something over 20k) and there's no way for them to identify the traffic and they can't do anything to stop you unless they throttle your whole connection. afaik. :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 867 ✭✭✭IgsTer

yeah does that work vibe..i posted a pic in this thread earlier on how to do it in utorrent but not sure if it actually works..you ibb guys who are having problems should try it out..vibe666 are you on ibb yourself?

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

no, i'm on the BT 3mbps one.

i hammer my connection every month with torrents and i've never noticed any throttling.

in fact, this is me now:

    bandwidth.jpg

always used Az for torrents. not sure if BT would throttle if they could tell it was torrents tho, but when it's on a non-standard port and everything is encrypted, it could be anything i suppose. data is data at the end of the day.

BTW, for anyone who's used AZereus in the past and found it to hammer their CPU and Memory, it's gotten a hell of a lot better recently. got the latest version of java and Az (not the v3 beta, that's not so good just yet) and am currently running flat out with 3 well seeded torrents and memory usage in task manager is holding steady at approx. 73mb and when I minimise it to the system tray, that drops down to 32mb. it does climb again after that, but it stays respectable, and will reset down to 30mb or so every time i re-minimise it again. can't say fairer than that.

The sppeds were back up again and have slowed down again.
I just think that it's problems with their network - I rang support 2 nights ago to see if there was anything up and they had a 20 min wait on their support line, so I figured I wasn't the only one having problems (I didn't bother holding to speak to them).

  • Registered Users Posts: 867 ✭✭✭IgsTer

    ah alri then..

well i hope it gets fixed for ya's all on ibb..post back when it eventually does :D

i'sd say it has more to do with them not caring enough about their customers to have enough support staff on (a common problem amongst ISP's) rather than a particuarly high volume of calls.

that said, i used to work for eircom.net and when i started we were taking about 10-15 calls a day. by the time i finished 11 months later it was pushing 70 a day and new staff kept dropping like flies (about a 3 month average lifespan) so quality of support was pretty poor.

that would be nearly 5 years ago now i think. can't imagine it's gotten any better tbh, and they're (allegedly) the experts.

Have to say this is driving me nuts.

Ever since the Breeze upgrade to 3 meg I haven't been able to get any individual torrents to run faster than 30k-40k and usually they don't get above 15k. I can get up to 100k with lots of separate torrents running at the same time...but no faster than that.

I've tried changing my client (utorrent, azureus, bittorrent) and firewall with no improvement. Also messed with all my settings but no difference seen.

Has anyone who has seen this problem actually managed to get back to normal?

Mine is still up and down like a yo-yo.

And, like you, it does seen to be since I got upgraded to 3MB

tell me if it works :)

I'm not on IBB, but I'm on a local wifi ISP, where they definately have torrents blocked (the router is programmed to drop any bittorrent packets).
That encryption setting in uTorrent is the only thing that actually works :)

Unfortunately I tried the encryption setting on utorrents, but couldn't see any difference.

By the sounds of things I'm not going to get an easy answer to this - other than maybe changing ISP.
