I'm going to be in Dublin the first weekend in February to celebrate my birthday. I'm looking for a nice restaurant. I've been to La Gondola, which I quite like, but doesn't have a very good drinks selection. Eden, which I hated. Eliza Blues, which was decent. And Shanahan's, which is over-priced. Can anyone recommend a place that has good food and a nice atmosphere and won't cost me 500 euros?

    Thanks!

Really lovely place, great service/staff and a nice crowd.

The Food & Drink forum has a restaurant guide thread.

Also worth having a read of this:

Botticellis, at the far end of Temple Bar, is one I have been in a few times and it is not bad.The Mongolian BBQ, as I mentioned in the "Same old questions" thread, is different in lots of ways and good for the start of a night out.

I think this place is a bit "novel" but I find the food tasteless! Mind you, I was there years ago, I have to go back and have a try.

Anyone try SABA? Flukey, if you like your asian delights, you will love this place. (great prices too..) I have been to Vietnam and other parts of Asia, this place http://www.sabadublin.com/ and Ho Sen in temple bar are the real thing.

Chapter One is fantastic. It's a bit pricey for the standard menu, but they have good value lunch and pre-theatre menus.

Not your everyday kind of place, but lovely for a special occasion.

I am not into Asian food particularly, but the thing about the Mongolian BBQ, as you know, is that the food is normal food. It is initially all raw. You pick what you want and they just put it on a hot plate and cook it. They are all small portions, so it only takes a few minutes to cook. It is up to you what you want, and what spices, sauces etc. that you add. So it does not matter what food you like and whether you are a vegetarian or whatever. That is the nice thing about it. It suits everyone. You can have as much or as little as you want. The thing to remember is that when you fill the bowl, after cooking it shrinks. You learn that quickly and the second and subsequent times, you pile it up higher. :)

Tante Zoes in temple bar is a cajun/creole restaurant, and was lovely the time I was there.

Bleu on Dawson St. (I think) is very nice, was there for my sisters grad a couple of years ago and it was delicious.

I'd recommend against this. Found it very over-priced with meagre portions. I was with a group and we were all very disappointed with what we got. The staff also, once we were finished our "meal", thrust dessert menus at us without even asking were we interested (we weren't).

I love the Mongolian BBQ but it's more of a place for a group, a precusor to a night out rather than being the reason for a night out (IMO).

If you can afford to go a couple of miles out from the city centre, I'd strongly recommend Roly's Bistro in Ballsbridge. Nice atmosphere, good food, and whilst not cheap not in the realm of Shannahans either.
