I was originally just going to do Science in TCD next year well hoping to do it.. but yesterday i came across this new course that is starting next year in UCD..

I really though am wondering about how credible this course would be and whether it would be a significant step towards meteorology..

The other thing stopping me is i don't want to trek all the way to UCD!!

Anyone know whether this course would fit the bill for an aspiring meteorologist??;)

    regards

    Sounds good WC.
From reading posts on other forums from meteorologists it would seem that a primary degree in mathematics is pretty valuable starting out compared to other generic courses.

Hopefully Dappergent might answer this best in an Irish context, you could also write to the Irish Met Office and ask them what they think.

I did a science degree in Trinity a long time ago and it was a good overall degree with possibility to specialise in the geography modules however there wasn't much meteorological content/specialisation then.
I've since moved into a totally different area (and gotten a business degree also) that that degree is not useful bar the fact its good to have a degree on your CV as it shows the ability to knuckle down and apply yourself.

Probably any scientific degree is good, but would imagine being very good at mathematics is pretty important, I wasn't fantastic at maths and thus wouldn't have made the grade (the 1937 Reading Room in Trinity had some meteorological textbooks and the maths was just mindblowing to me).

Good luck in whatever you eventually choose!

I went to UCD and done physics many moons ago and you do atmospherics iirc in 4th year WC and have received some info on the MET course last summer there but for a mature student:o ,it helps if you have the degree alright as is nearly top of the requirements, who knows maybe we be in a lecture one day together:eek:  :D.
but with a family, mortgage and my current job its just not practical atm unfortunately. At least its a start to bring a course out dedicated directly to the field of study in MET.

    WC,
One you should talk to the lecturers running the course.
Two-talk to DapperGent who might put you in touch with people in the met who will discuss the course merits.

I asumme you've already seen these but just in case you haven't here's the summaries out of the UCD undergraduates courses booklet which my brother kindly lent to me, he can't understand my interest in the weather at all. It doesn't matter to me as much atm as i'm only sitting the baby junior cert. this year:D. TCD will probably come out with a similar course over the next year or two but that's not much good to you.
