Part Load - Uk to Ireland

I am moving from Essex, UK to Co Sligo in the not too distant future. I will only have a part load (around 250 cubic feet) mostly boxes and many removal firms won't give me the time of day because of the small load and where I am going to.

Can someone please recommend a man with a van type removal service which won't cost the earth? I don't mind sharing the van with another load and can also be flexible date wise.

    Many thanks! :)

Thanks for that but they seem to just do parcels and I also have a filing cabinet, a bookcase and a bicycle! :)

Ah right, I just had a few items (couple of computers) moved over from London a few years ago. Best of luck with the move! :)

or Seven Seas - just google seven seas shipping - they'll even give you an online quote. they specialise in shipping personal effects without furniture, but they will take a few odd size items e.g. bike, golf clubs, guitar etc.

Hahahhhaha - well I'm not using them for my gear to Australia if that helps!

I've just been looking into this, making decisions on what to bring and what not to bring and phoning around for quote for shipping for nearly two months. We've finally settled on shipping about 25-30 tea chests of effects, a king size bed, my office desk, coffee table, golf clubs, guitar and a beer fridge (it's got to come) and various other odd-sized bits. It's going to cost us the guts of £1,500 STG, but that covers the shippers packing all our gear, shipping it from our door, six weeks shipment by sea, helping us with customs and shipping to the door at the other end. They even offered to unpack for us, but a lot of our stuff will be staying in storage so there's no need.

It could all go to hell in a handcart, or even wash up on a beach and get nicked by a bunch of pikeys, but oh well!

That's reasonable! Someone today quoted me almost £1000 for 45-50 boxes, a couple of bags, 1 suitcase, 1 bike, 1 filing cabinet and a bookcase!

I'm now seeing if there is a van type business in/around Sligo that goes between Ireland and the UK and see if it's more reasonable that way around. So any suggestions from the west/north west very welcome! :)

Coming from Ireland to Cambridge we used DunnesofBorris an outfit in Carlow.

We had no problems with them, they require you to pack yourself but will take pretty much anything (legal!). They weren't too expensive and I know that they do take loads from the UK to Ireland too.

    Two things to note:
    1. their website is down at the mo but I still have the phone number if you want it. They will deliver to Sligo too.
    2. While we were happy with the service our friends used them to move from Dublin to London and weren't happy with the service

Thanks for that but I've decided to go with Careline who quoted me over £400 cheaper than anyone else so I was very happy with that.

    Currently sorting out delivery/collection.

Thanks for all your help! :D

I'm planning on moving back next year also and although I haven't looked into it, my plan was to fly to ireland hire a van for a week drive back to london load up and head off home again.

Is there any reason not to do that?

Well the only reason I can think of is that you may not fit it all in the van! I recently moved from Cambridge to Bury St. Edmunds (28 miles away) and we didn't have a lot to move so I hired a Transit van, I decided to go for the long wheel-base to be sure I'd be okay...good job I did! We filled the Transit completely and alsoo the back of our car and the boot! So if you are absolutely sure that you can fit it all in a van then go for it.

The other thing I found was that I had to reverse the transit (3-point turn) at one stage and had I not had my other half with me I probably would have either hit another parked carwhile reversing or still be there going back and forth :D Not having a rear-view mirror and being in a larger vehicle than normal can make judging distance difficult so having someone with you for the journey would be good.
