Just wondering what people think - locate the new National Childrens Hospital at the Mater on Eccles St, or site it elsewhere?

Anyway, good to know there's been so much progress on it since this:
In a recent announcement the Minister for Health and Children, Mr. Micheal Martin T.D. launched the Development Control Plan for the Mater and Children`s Hospital Developments, which will create a new hospital campus on the current derelict car-park site of the Mater Misericordiae Hospital at Eccles Street, in Dublin`s North Inner City. The project is the largest health project under the National Development Plan and is estimated to cost EUR340 million. The Mater and Children`s Hospital developments incorporate the Mater Hospital, significantly extended and developed, and a new purpose-built Children`s Hospital. The objective of the development is to enhance and develop the roles of both hospitals and to improve the level of patient service in purpose-built up to date facilities.

The date of that was 21 December 2001

What's wrong with it? Location! Location! Location! That is a very busy part of the city. Having a large scale national hospital there is not ideal. The Farrington proposal makes more sense, as it is more accessible for most people. You can't make everyone happy of course, but weighing all things up, somewhere slightly outside the city is better, for lots of reasons, not just accessibility. Things like parking, room to expand in the future, access to outside areas with fresh air, and lots of other things. The Mater does not really suit those criteria.

Well its National so it's handy that people not just living in Dublin can get reasonably good access if they don't know the city. Also, for those actually living in Dublin, the city centre is not the best transport and traffic wise.

Tallaght: M50, Luas to Heuston, and national rail from there
James's: N4, Luas, right next to Heuston.

Imagine coming from Mayo and having to spend an extra hour trying to get around dublin city centre! Madness, IMHO.

I believe many of the worlds best childrens hospitals are in busy central city areas. Including the Toronto Sick Kids and Great Ormond St

Strange that the 2 childrens hospitals that have to move are opposed, whereas the one that just moves up the road think it's the right place. That speaks volumes.

Everybody has an angle which also makes me suspicious of any private enterprise offering something at a knockdown price.

Sadly the welfare of children seems to be secondary :(
