    Was surfing the web.
wanted to watch a video but media player wouldnt play it coz i needed some additional download. so i clicked to download.
    Im have McAfee anti virus.
It started detecting viruses and deleting them.
I just ran a virus scan and everything is clear.

But an ico has appeared on the bottom right toolbar of the screen.
The is a flashing caution sign with a message that says:

    System alert: Trojan-Spy.Win32@mx
    Type: Spyware/Trojan
    Vunerable: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2003/XP
Description: Spyware program that sends confidential information to remote attacker.
Protection: Click this baloon to download official security software

I dont want to click it because it doesnt mention McAfee anywhere and when I close it it pops up again straight awy again.

    What is it???
    What should I do???

Try downloading AVG Anti spyware and running a scan in Safe Mode.

    Ok.

Let us know if the scan fixes the problems otherwise it could be something else, I'm thinking maybe Smitfraud (where there is a fix for also).

The scan showed up 13 medium threat files.
I found them on my hard-drive, deleted them, restarted my computer and have no problems since.
    Thanks for the help Ruu.

There were some very dodgy messages popping up on my screen
I wonder what would have happened had I clicked them.

Nothing much, what happens is you pick up some spyware and it tells you its there(in a annoying way). Then tells you to go to their site where you have to pay to get it re-moved. Sometimes they use it for credit card details etc.

I agree with Ruu, it may well be Smitfraud. I came across it a couple of months ago on a friend's computer and it sounds just like the problem you're having. You can download a fix for it here.

This seams to be the best anti-spyware software on the net.
