partioning hdd

    HI, i was wondering was it possible to create a partion on an active hdd without reformatting the entire thing.

    i have a 260gb secondary hdd with 14+ gbs of music plus movies etc and i would like to create a dual boot system with xp and ubantu but ill need to partion the hdd and all info i can find says it needs to be reformatted and im way to lazy to start that kind of backup:p

    any info would be greatly appriected

    yes you can, using the partitioner that comes on ubuntu's live cd.

    you can basically resize your windows partition to allow space to install ubuntu.

    have a look at this http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/installing

    it's a walkthrough of the ubuntu installation.

    looking at the partiton screenshots you'll want to select option three, manually edit partition tables, in here you can resize your windows partition and create a new partition for ubuntu.

    good luck with it, it's very simple install to do but well worth it.

    the only thing i'd suggest though is to make a backup i've learned how heart breaking it is to lose files see here

    do u use ububtu?? im thinking of moving to a lynix system altogether and im really immpressed wit this software microsoft could learn a lot from them!!!

    i have ubuntu set up on my laptop, i don't use it that much but it is great for beginners and gives a good introduction to the world of linux.
