Cannot open programs.

Hi,
I think I have a virus. I have run AVG, AVASt, Spybot, Defender, Ad aware, and some more that I cant remember now.

When I try to open certain programs, an egg timer appears but program does not open.
But the system tray will tell me it is running!!!??
I have tried to do a system restore, but it did not work.
And recently the system restore does not complete!!

Other than that the machine dell inspiron 9400 is running well. I use AVG antivirus software..:o :mad: :eek:

Any ideas.?
I was gonna defrag the whole thing tonight ..but would prefer not to ...

Try running hijackthis and place the log up here, some of us can have a gawk at it for you and might be able to find the culprit.

Also if you have Avast installed schedule a boot time scan so Avast will scan the OS before it loads to the desktop & see if it catches anything.

To schedule a scan start Avast and right click anywhere then selecte schedule scan from the menu.

(note not a good idea to have multiple anti-virus programs running at the same time disable/uninstall AVG or Avast)

not sure if these are the cause of my problem though...

Ideas?? how to remove....
BTW: if i just have avg free, is the "resident shield" a firewall?????

The resident shield for AVG free would be presumably to stop viruses in their tracks. Try AVG Anti Spyware to remove those other few items.
