I've just started using an Insixt hard disk caddy (from Peat's electronics Parnell st Dublin) which a friend gave me as it was surplus to his requirements. It holds one 3.5in hard drive (in my case one that I cannibalised from an old Gateway--hawk spit--tower machine). Plugs into the USB port and works like a dream. Don't know how much it cost but Komplett is offering such devices for 25-45 euro.

Pretty idiot proof. Just screw in the drive, plug in the connectors and stick it into the USB port.

I think the problem here is cheap ...

I was looking for something similar a while back ... the best I could come up with was around 250EUR for a 250GB disk ... that said I stayed with the main stream sites ...

    Maybe one of these
Linksys Network Storage Link for USB 2.0 hard drives for 95EUR would do the job for you ?

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=307213

My problem would be having to have it powered as well as the eternal drive ...

still if you find anything thats cheap and reliable let us know ? :)

There would be something like this ...
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2485710&CatId=207

but I've no idea if its any good ... 55$

found a few on ebay that look loike they'd do the job.

also Dabs.ie have some as well but they come with a HD alreay.

i suppose its either those or cobbel together some old parts from a few old machines and just have a pc acting as a server. Like the idea of a portable one though!
