    Ok,

I don't have broadband and can't get it at all and I'm not going to bother you all with my usual annoying spiel.

Can I borrow a mates ADSL router, hook it up and calculate from line attenuation the distance to the exchange without having broadband? I know the exchange is DSL enabled, at least the main one is (think I'm hanging off a sub-exchange).

your dial up speed should be c 50k if you are within a mile of an exchange , best rule of thumb

No - you will only get an attenuation figure on a dsl modem after it has successfully trained - so broadband has to be enabled on the line to check it this way.
