I recall that some time ago, someone on here was able to find out which mast their vodafone data card was connected to using some sort of "command"

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Cheers!

I was looking into trying to find out.
The comreg site as far I can see is by now very out of date,
but it just shows you where the masts are.

To find out what mast I was connecting to,
I bought a Nokia 6680 and run a program called "CellWatcher" on it.
It's a series 60 program, so will run on a range of phones.

Of course, the IDs it gives me bear no relationship to the names
on the ComReg map, but at least I can see when it changes, and
where in the area I'm connecting to the same mast.

If anyone could help me tie these IDs to physical locations,
    I'd be well pleased.

This will give you some info:
Close your data card application dashboard.
Open a terminal program - minicom in Linux, or hyperterminal in windows.
Connect to the card directly. It'll be on the list of modems in windows.

    The command
AT+CSQ will tell you your signal strength,
AT+COPS=? will tell you what signals are available.
AT+COPS? will tell you what you're connected to.

The easiest thing to do is ring vodafone, they have your address and they can see your nearest mast on the GIS, why do you want to know what mast your connected to anyway?

Ringing Vodafone is not going to do you any good at all.
Your nearest mast is a very different answer to a different question.

As you move from one side of a room to another, you can move
between masts. I have an area of a few inches on my window where
I get a 3 bar 3G signal. Move the phone a foot, and I'm connected to
    a different - non 3G enabled - mast.

The tech dept would be able to tell you what mast you're on at any one time - getting through to them to have them "waste" their time simply for the sake of knowing is a whole other issue.

I was in Australia in December and on the vodafone network, this info was always displayed on the main screen under the provider. nice little touch, dont think it would be so hard for voda ireland to provide it on there phones. (it was given as the suburb you were in, very handy if anyone has used a street directory in perth ! )

I remember the same thing when I was in Europe... of course most of it made no sense, but it was nice to have it :) Shame none of the Irish networks support it.
