knocking supporting wall in timber frame house

    Hi,

    We're planning on knocking a supporting wall between two rooms. Our house is a timber frame house. I know for a concrete house an RSJ would be the norm but what should we be looking for in a timber frame house? The builder suggested oak beams but we're concerned that these may not be strong enough or of shrinkage. What is usual in a timber frame house?

    you can still use an rsj it functions in the same way for timber houses exceptl load is transferred down outer leaf. Dont be afraid of timber beams. properly treated and installedthey can add great aesthetic value to the room.

    Get the wall plan for the studding from the builder, if you can - it'd make life easier.

    Then you can plan size/position of RSJ - and don't forget you'll need to cripple stud it in several locations to provide proper support.
