Moving material from the site

    Hi all,

We are starting to realise that we may have to move a considerable amount of material (maybe up to 800m3)from our site. Although the engineer has yet to say for sure what needs to happen this has been suggested, and is a big concern...

Does anyone know how it is decided whether material has to be removed from a site or can be levelled across other parts of the site? We are having to dig into a hill on one side of the site and will have to build retaining walls as well. Are these expensive? - again we're waiting to hear back from the engineer as to what is involved... we have a quite a bit of space at the back of our site.

BTW the material is likely to be very stony - the bore hole indicated that the ground is made up of lots of shale. The stuff might be used for making a drive into another site site or as good quality fill.

Any advice or suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

There always seems to be a demand for good quality fill. Ask around.

Officially you need a waste permit if you wish to deposit any type of fill on your own site or someone elses. I kid you not.

But I wont tell if you dont :D

make sure any clean topsoil is kept for the garden later.

You could always try a local farmer who might have a "low spot" on his land that needs raising, e.g. under gates, ponding area in a field etc.
