Websites and hosting have disappeared

I'm hoping someone can shed a bit of light on this.

A friend of mine has had all of his sites, disappear and he can't even get access to his cpanel.
The hosting company's website has also disappeared: 4uhosting.co.uk

From a little digging around it seems 4uhosting.co.uk was running on telia.net and that also seems to be down.

    Anyone got any ideas?

It sounds like the hosting co. has gone belly up.
He should move to another host.

One of the sites came back up for a few minutes but went down again.
I'm thinking it could be a hardware failure somewhere along the line.

I guess he'll just have to sit it out a bit longer and see what happens.

Has he backups of the sites?
    Can they ftp in?
I was in a similar problem last year but managed to have done regular file and data backups. Now I will only use local (Irish) hosting.

it seems to be the danger of using cheap foregin hosting resellers

Nothing is proving Irish ISPs are more reliable :-)
And Irish ISPs will be less and less reliable anyway in a near future as there is more and more ISPs.
This has been seen in all countries in the past.
Irish ISPs have a lot of cash atm because they use to rip off the customers for sol long.

Take the Cyber Cafes in Dublin now. There was a lot a few years ago, at at least 5 euros/hour, there is less and less, and the ones who are working very well are the chinese ones :-)

But when the choice comes to selecting an ISP (Irish or Foreign) make sure the guys have been around for more than 3 years.

    I missed something.
How did we move from discussing hosts to ISPs and internet cafes?

Panic over, the sites are back up.

It was a major hardware failure at the host.

    Thanks for the info.

    Three points:

    1) If it's an Irish site, then Google's "pages from Ireland" views it as less relevant if it's hosted in the UK (and won't see it at all if it doesn't have a .ie domain)
    2) Aside from the "foreign" issue, I don't think I'd trust a company that can't spell the word "for" without resorting to annoying text-speak
    3) Rule of thumb - the more you pay, the better service/support you should get (within reason and avoiding rip-offs). It should also be easier to contact them than post on boards.ie; having said that, s**t happens and 24 hours downtime isn't TOO bad a response if it is cheap hosting.

    A few points:

    1) It's not an Irish site.
    2) My mate is English, so he went for some local English hosting.
    3) He's never had a problem with the hosting in the past and has always had good support from them.
    4) They suffered a catastrophic system failure. He had never needed their phone number in the past so didn't have it to hand when it was needed.
    5) The name of the hosting company isn't really important. Who's to say that the 4U doesn't relate to rack space?

I appreciate all the replies and the PM I got offering help.
The thread should probably be locked before it descends into an argument.

    Cheers,

    Killian

    I did?
I was talking (on topic) about hosting etc. You started talking about ISPs which are entirely different. ISP wiki...

Hehe no big deal guys, I still know to read as far as I know.
Anyway his issue is fixed, so further discussions are pointless.

    You seem to be mistaken.

Anyway, glad to hear the sites are back. Perhaps the OPs friend should take a look see if their host has an announcements\alerts section to check the next time a problem arises.

The ISP term is commonly used to define general internet service providers, not only the company that will give you the internet pipe.
So in other words I was also talking about hosting as well.

Well of course we did think of that and this is what we were greeted with:

That sounds extremelly un-pro anyway. Home hosting ?
You should seriously think to move over.

Surprisingly enough, 4uhosting are considered "reputable", if a little ryanairish.

Doesn't bode well for them though. There should be no such thing as an "unrecoverable" system crash if you're a hosting company. :) I suspect they've just phrased that badly though.

Like Seamus says they are supposed to be a fairly reputable company.

My friend isn't hosting anything critical with them but i've made some backups for him so he won't be screwed complete if they do go belly up.

He'll most likely move elsewhere anyway.

    The sites are fine.
My mate has decided to move to different hosting.

4u's site is still down but they are giving support again via email.

    Not much else to report.
