I was onto O2 yesterday and the 8800 will be out in 3-4 weeks currently on test !

Yes, but obviously you're gonna need to scroll around and some of the fancy javascript may not work as it does on your PC.

I was talking to Vodafone on Friday and "there are currently no plans to release this handset" :(

Looks like I'll be switching then :)

    EXACTLY :D

Sums up what I am saying, but some people are under the illusion you have WAP browsing only. This is NOT the case

Also, you CAN use the Blackberry as a modem for your PC or laptop using a mini-usb cable, but not via Bluetooth. The Bluetooth on Blackberry is very basic and is "more or less*" only for headset support

    *depends on model

But what APN are you using for the laptop connection? i.e. Is it really possible to surf free on open.internet ? I seem to get charged for Internet browsing.:(

Sorry if I am not clear enough.
You can surf wap and standard http sites all day long on the Blackberry using the Blackberry browser and there are no extra charges

However, should you want to use the Blackberry as a modem for desktop/laptop, you can do so, but as you say, you then use the "open.internet" APN and normal charges apply

I was merely pointing out that in an emergency, the Blackberry COULD be used as a modem, but I wasnt clear enough that using it this way, you pay normal charges, so it would normally be for "emergency only" use

    Hope this clears it up

(Hmm... Just looking at my original post...... I did in fact make it appear that you could use it as a modem without charge!!......Sorry for confusing the matter)

Sorry to dig up an old thread but i thought it was better than starting a new post on the same topic!

The o2 blackberry add on gives unlimited email / internet browing but then in the T&Cs its says:
"Yahoo!® Messenger & Google™ Talk are currently free to download and charges for usage are included within your monthly tariff until further notice. O2 reserves the right to introduce charges for Yahoo! Messenger & Google Talk and/or withdraw the use of Yahoo! Messenger & Google Talk with 30 days notice."

I don't really understand this - if unlimited internet is included surely it would be free to use google talk anyway as it's just like looking at any other website no??

Absolute bargain to be had at the moment with O2
    See http://forums.o2online.ie/forums/showthread.php?t=422

Basically it all depends on what access point your application uses, so if its not going through the Blackberry access point and uses the o2 access point it costs normal data charges

I've been giving this current offer serious consideration (especially now the iP3G is out of Stock)

    http://www.o2online.ie/wps/wcm/connect/O2/Home/Shop/Phones/Blackberry+offer/

I think I understand the discussion about "unlimited" internet browsing. So my question really is - what is the browsing speed like ? Will I be able to use my Gmail + GoogleTalk or am I better off with a proper WiFi phone ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,929 ✭✭✭dubmick

just to clarify the Blackberry package on Vodafone only includes email. You will be charged fro WAP usage. I only found this out after I signed up.

I got 2/3 months free line rental as an apology.

bye, bye Vodafone when my contract is up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,291 ✭✭✭eclectichoney

On the o2 package my understanding is that all browsing is included, once you use the blackberry browser?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,340 CMod ✭✭✭✭Davy

unlimited texts and calls to O2 customers, unlimited email and unlimited internet for €39.99 a month

I had an original Pearl last year and the reason I went for O2 over Vodafone was because of EDGE. Speed is pretty good, gmail etc works fine. Never tried Google talk though

ok ok .. .can we pause the O2/Vodaphone package discussion for a moment.....

Who can tell me if the phone is any good as a mobile device ?
    - what is the camera like ?
    - OS is easy to use or no ? Applications available ?
    - Does it sync with your Outlook Contacts without issue ?
    - Is the screen painfully small for proper web browsing ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 587 ✭✭✭richieg

Phone was very good to use as a phone, good battery life, call quality, easy access to email and web
OS is simple to use once you get used to it and trackball works very well
    Syncs with outlook fine
screen size really depends on what you are used to, what phone are you coming from. I never found it too small

Sorry if this is a silly question, but since Blackberry has a modem function, would it be possible to hook it up to the laptop (over bluetooth) as a modem, and connect to work VPN / download outlook emails on the move (to the laptop) etc?

PS: Okay, I should have read the thread before posting! Apologies. Also figured out its a "may be / kinda / should" situation, works in some networks, with some models. Its not okay with O2 though.

    Its all academic now anyway because despite the advertisement;
"Join O2 and get the new BlackBerry Pearl 8110 for only €49 and receive Unlimited Calls, Texts, Emails and Internet Browsing, all wrapped up for €39.99 per month with O2 Clear Unlimited and BlackBerry Internet Service"

And my understanding of the conditions:
    - BlackBerry Pearl 8110 is only available at €49 to customers who port their number to O2 Pay Monthly Unlimited O2 calls and text price plan contract for the first time.
    - Existing customers can avail of a special upgrade price for the BlackBerry Pearl 8110, only when adding the 'BlackBerry Internet Service' to their price plan for the first time

The guys at O2 customer care insist that I must pay €129 for the Pearl with my Platinum upgrade.!?!

Better off waiting for the iPhone which I can get for €49 with my Platinum upgrade and choose any price plan I like !

Here's hoping the next iP3G arrives soon :-)

Can someone with the blackberry 8110 clarify how the gps works with o2 ireland. Does it need to 'fetch' the maps al the time or are they saved on the phone? If so, does this cost extra for data charges or is it included in the 'unlimited browsing' thing? i know someone who is intrested in buying it with the new offer.
    Would one be able to download the new google maps with voice recognition or would you have to pay for all data charges?;
    http://gizmodo.com/5021821/blackberry-pearl-gets-google-maps-with-voice-search
Also, can someone confirm tat o2 ireland have updated the blackberry internet service to 2.5 that now supports free hotmail accounts. Thanks

Yes. It fetches maps on the fly. I use Blackberry Maps and Google Maps on an 8310 Curve and with EDGE connection it downloads more than quick enough. Also, this is built into the cost as it uses the Blackberry access point to download the data

Also, the O2 BIS *has* been updated and it also supports full html email now ;)

Havent tried the newest Google maps wioth voice. Will try that and post back. By the way, you can set Google Maps on satellite view when using with GPS and watch as it redraws while moving along. Quite cool!

<EDIT>Seems it only supports 8110, 8120 and 8130 models and as mine is 8310 I cannot try it yet - ALSO NOTICED ITS US ONLY FOR NOW</EDIT>

Just got mine today and I'm sending it straight back...
It came without any Browser application and does not allow you to browse the web unless you pay the ridiculous 20 euro BB Plan fee.
Why would anyone have to pay 20 euro to receive 100 spam and 2 valid emails each day?

I asked before I bought it, if the BB Pearls can browse the web with a data plan using GPRS.
They said it could and were clearly lying. They had the cheek to charge me the monthly €7.50 data plan for data that I would never be able to use unless i paid for the €20 euro BB plan as well.
The words RIP-OFF come to mind.

i can browse the web and use the mobile gmail app for collecting emails on my bb for the €20 a month fee, i dont pay for a data plan at all, i'd browse the web daily with the pearl and the gmail would be constantly checking for mail.

The monthly charge is 14.99 on O2 for unlimited email and browsing.
If your browser icon is not showing up make sure you show all applications in case its hidden. On the main icon screen press the menu button and select show all applications.

Just a question but why did you buy the blackberry if you are only receiving 2 genuine emails a day?

I'm interested in signing up for the o2 offer but I don't want to port my vodafone number.

Could I buy a sim card from Meteor or Vodafone ready to go and port that number? As I understand it you have to port a number to avail of the offer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 587 ✭✭✭richieg

I would think you could as they will not know any different nor will they care as long as they sign another number up to the network

Sounds like it would work. Wonder if there's a catch?

Wherever you bought it they obviously didnt have a clue
Go back, tell them you want the data tariff removed and Blackberry tariff added. You will not need a data tariff with the Blackberry tariff as ALL email and ALL browsing is free (unlimited)
Once they do that and you set it up via www.o2mail.ie, all settings will be sent to your phone and the browser icon will then appear and its automatically setup to start using.
Post back here if you need any more help
