    Hi,

    My girlfriend has started on the pill. My question is, do couples usually continue to use condoms when the girl starts on the pill? - how effictive is the pill?

    Thanks.

    The mini pill or the combined pill ?

    [quote= http://www.ifpa.ie/contraception/pop.html]Guide to Contraception: Progestogen-only Pill

    progestone-only pillThere are two main types of Pill which vary in hormone content and the way they work. The most widely used are the combined pills which have two hormones, oestrogen and progestogen. There are also pills which have progestogen only and no oestrogen. This fact sheet is about the progestogen-only pill. See the relevant fact sheet for information on the combined pill

    How effective is it?
    Tests show that for every 100 women who take the progestogen-only pill very carefully and consistently, one will get pregnant in a year. But with less careful and consistent use, four or more women in 100 will get pregnant. This pill is even more effective in women over 40 years of age. To make the pill as effective as it can be, remember:

    * To take it regularly, and at the same time each day.
    * Use another contraceptive method as well if you miss a pill or are sick, have severe diarrhoea, or are taking medicines which may interfere with the pill.

    The contraceptive pill is not 100%, it will not protect you from the STI condoms protect you from ( condoms don't protect against all Sti ).

    You should not stop using condoms unless you have both had a sti screening
    and if you have concerns about the pill failing as it is not 100% even under the optimal conditions.
