Wasn't that because Paul said, after Chris Bond (Labour Youth) was elected to be his fellow Arts PRO, that he looked forward to "yet another successful Fianna Fáil-Labour coalition"? Quite funny at the time...

Anyway, I notice that this has gotten rather off-topic.

So has anyone decided who they're voting for?
I don't really care as I won't be around next year.
Also, I've been sick for ages so haven't been in to see any campaign material.

Nice link there dajaffa. Lynham and Regan came across very well I thought, I don't think Shanahan got a chance really. Looking forward to seeing the manifestos. Its going to be a close one.

We've had ours in the Earl of Kildare (oddly enough on Kildare Street) for years and years. Set up is grand because only the candidates and one person is allowed up to the count room, while everyone else remains at the bar (of which there are two). If a fight happens, the bouncers step in.
And I think the only fight/near fight as long as i've been around was your man trying to start a fight with enda and myself last year.

anyhow, best of luck to all the UCD candidates.

dajaffa did you recored that yourself or are belfield fm going down the youtube road, if its the latter then Im glad. Personnally I think its a shame (and I was really surprised) that Bfm arent streaming online or placing recordings online. And of course as a commerce student Id just like to ring home the advantages of competition to all those socialists out there in the arts block. Privitise the union!!

That's what you missed out on voting for as your UCDSU President, everyone!

Official BFM recording btw, recorded by HappyCrackHead in the BFM studios.

It's been our plan since I took over the news show to have the candidate debates online to give a chance to let students who don't have a can't tune in hear from the candidates.

Can't comment on streaming since I don't have any involvement with the technical side but there's a problem of copyright infringement with putting music online which would affect most of our shows

I've always thought of people running for VP as admitting defeat before they had even started. 'Sure, I didn't want to be President anyway'.

You mean you think that anyone who doesn't run for President is careerist?

I used to think this too but I actually think the name 'vice president is very misleading. It's not a second in command position at all. '

The deputy pres is in charge of coordinating class reps, ensuring maximum numbers run for a class rep position, coordinating campaigns and generally being liason between the union and classes. In my eyes its actually more important then the presidents position. If U have a dire deputy president (cough weafer cough) then there'll be no coordination between the union and the students they represnt. Dave C was great at coordinating all the campiagns and making sure lots of students got invloved. I have full confidence thatCiara Brennan will do the same.

i dont have a clue to vote for. how do we get info on the people who are running?
i'm only going to vote for people i recognise until i learn more about them. people who i dont recognise, i'll judge them on what subject they do or what political group they are apart of.
any Labour youth or socialist running wont be getting my vote, bar chris bond.

Manifestos will be appearing this week; the poster race is on Monday evening and usually the printer sends all the materials back in one batch so all should be public then.

so there is no competition for president or vice president?

I wouldnt rite RON off against Brennan to be honest. Lots of people around the arts block were coming out for Chris simply because of the opposition.

Obviously I'm going to biased in saying this, but honestly, I think people should be wait until the manifesto surfaces this week; I think quite a few people could be surprised by it. Though I suppose that point goes across the board - wait until you see what people promise to do, before choosing to write them off.

Just with my dealings with Ciara , whom I sure is a lovely person, I find she can talk the talk but gives up easliy when loses interest. She took the Head of Sport with BelfieldFM. Turned up and gave a speech at meeting 1 this year and then just quit.

Id be afraid she'd lose interest in Dep Pres as quickly as she did in the other positions she went for / wanted

ps: anyone with half a brain can pump out a fantastic manifesto but we both know the elections are run on the past preformance of the candidates . Barry -> Welfare . Quinlivan -> Ents

there are 4 vice presidents, there is only one candidate for Deputy President vice president.

Each vice pres is of equal status, ie the Deputy pres is not second in command. They should prob change that title to campaigns officer or something

In the recent proposed constitution it was changed to communications officer. It was kinda written last minute with the hope of holding a referendum woth the sabbat elections but council went below quorum when it was presented so there wasn't time to call a referendum to be held with the upcoming elections

That's just stupid, I'm the first person to admit that i'm no fan of the politcal divisions within the SU but people have a democratic right to be a member of a political party and that has to be respected.

If anything (and this is my own personal opinion) people who are so called ''lefties'' in the SU generally have done alot of more for the SU and students of this college than the ''righties''. For example where have last year's campaigns against the poor implementation of S&M, grants etc. vanished to this year? ;)

I would generally consider myself to BE a ''lefty'' on most issues but that doesn't mean I'd vote for a Labour Youth member or Socialist over KBC or Fianna Fail member in every SU election, I've done the opposite on a few occasions because I vote for someone on their ideas and their individual integrity and on not their political affiliation.

    please read my post propperly.

i said i didnt know who to vote for so i was going to vote based on thier political affiliation. accept chris bond cause i knew him. but i know he is not running anymore.
apparently in UL the SU got rid of most of its socialists and its mostly run by people from YFG.

Why oh why would you vote on such a mute point as there political affiliation?????? Just because there affiliated with a certain party makes them no more qualified for the position. Many of the candidates have political affiliations, I don't agree with some peoples political affiliations but if I had been at home to vote I'd vote on the basis of whom I deem to be the best candidate for the position. You haven't even given the candidates the chance to put forward there manifestos. At least be somewhat opened minded and let people say what they want to do before you strike them out of the race.

What is to say that a candidate never joined a party, they felt it better to not join a party because they knew at some point that they may run for a sabbat position or even to do with a job later in life and they felt it more prudent to not join a party. Does that make them a better candidate then someone who decided to be completely honest about there own political beliefs and wanted to stand up for them???

    KBC ftw!

The last ones left in contested elections are Quinlivan and Rath.

And Shanahan for that matter? And indeed Brennan?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 801 ✭✭✭Vainglory
