Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I've been planning to set up an XGL WM recently just to sicken one of the Vista fetishists here in the office... for maximum effect, I'm planning to set the scene with VMWare running XP, then watch his face as I change over to spinny cubey goodness!

    Screenshot-4-scaled.jpg

Fedora Core 6 with Beryl (current beta release) running on work machine with integrated Intel Graphics (fairly good performance). I find the cube a very nice way to organise apps.

    Does it require root privelages?

    Does it require root privelages?

same result with root, edited xconf(?) file, lost access to X

going to reinstall Ubuntu & try again.

Make sure you have the desktop cube plugin activated in Beryl Settings Manager. Hold down Ctrl+Alt+Left Mouse Button and drag the mouse to rotate the cube. Ctrl+Alt+Arrow keys work too.

yes plugin is ticked , how do you activate it ?

when I jump between desktops I do get a rotation effect - It's like a horizontal rotation
I've only one workspace if that makes a difference.

I installed Beryl on my "other" laptop, running Ubuntu Edgy. It mostly works, but it's fairly easy to crash it - if I drag the cube around aggressively, say. Symptom is the whole screen freezes solid, and when I ssh in from here I see Xorg using 99.5-99.9% CPU.

Could this be due to fact that Ubuntu is using XGL as oppose to AIGLX (as in Fedora)? There is an extra overhead with XGL namely as you run XGL as a GL window ontop of a "standard X server", whereas AIGLX is an extension to the standard Xserver.

reinstalled Ubuntu 6.10 & followed link (for Intel chipset). Added Bery-Manager to Session/Startup Programs.

each time i login, the display freezes & Ubuntu restarts - is Beryl not stable on Intel integrated chipset?

What model of integrated Chipset you using? I can't speak for Ubuntu but Beryl works fine here on office machine runing Fedora Core 6 with Intel GMA950.

Intel 82855 GME graphics chipset (it's a HP Pavilion dv1000 notebook).

Nope, AIGLX here - it ships with Ubuntu as part of the standard X.org setup.

I had a similar experience with this laptop, running Edgy on an Intel 915GM. This is my production machine, so I didn't spend time playing with it.

well the cube rotates between desktops, I don't know if that's the same as workspaces, there is also a horizontal slide option which may be selected

Can you still play games (or other OpenGL stuff) when you've got an XGL desktop? Looks really cool, but I use some modelling software for my work which uses opengl to draw the pictures and i really am used to it being accelerated. Not to mention games etc.

Anyone got this working with KDE? It does really look great, but i'm a big KDE junkie especially after finding out how to do a split install and only put in the bits i want.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,421 ✭✭✭Steveire

I use it on kde. Unfortunately there is still some gtk requirements, such as the settings manager/ gconf. There is this though, which is in a branch on the beryl svn repo. Not yet in trunk. It works really well on kde as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,238 ✭✭✭humbert

I have beryl working with kde without any problems but playing movies is utterly shit, and when I start X without XGL it's fine so it is XGL causing the problem. I'm don't know enough to understand why but I get errors with mplayer saying my computer isn't fast enough and it's 2Ghz with 512 ram so it damn well is. I read an article describing how you could switch xgl off when running a game but it only worked on some cards(not ATI) and was a hack at best. Sorry I can't remember the url. If people have had success I'd be interested in hearing about it. Oh and the Kde split install is very handy, especially on gentoo with all the compiling!

  • Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 28,820 Mod ✭✭✭✭oscarBravo

I've subsequently discovered that the problem I was experiencing isn't specifically a beryl issue: other OpenGL-intensive apps running fullscreen will randomly hang up the CPU at 99.9% also.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 7,486 ✭✭✭Red Alert

I gather that Open GL apps will run with software rendering when you're using XGL. There's another thing called AIGLX which is part of Xorg and Beryl can use it, but there seem to be some issues with it.

Two tips - first is so you can "End Task" / "Ctrl Alt Del" like in windows

    Beryl Settings Manager

    Shortcuts
    Commands
Command 0 , Grab Key , Ctrl Alt Esc
Command 1 , Grab Key , Ctrl Alt Del

    General Options
    Commands
    Command 0, xkill
    Command 1, xkill

Now when you press the three keys you get a skull and crossbones, right click and it goes away, left click and it ends task on the window you clicked

    Desktop
    Desktop Cube
    Transparency
Opacity When Not Moving, set it to 100

This turns off the transparent desktop, which would otherwise cripple older systems, but still means you have transparency when you rotate the desktop with the keyboard/mouse.

    request
when I rotate the desktop it seems to zoom in first , is there a way to zoom back a bit ?

I love beryl. One of the most innovative pieces of software in quite some time.

Parasite. Don't know what you've done to try and remedy the situation but I had a problem with video on my setup ( an intel 945gm).

    This solves my problem.....

Install vlc if you don't have it.
go to terminal and type: vlc --X11

open a video and see if it works. If it does, right click a video file and go open with vlc --x11

    Good luck!
