Anybody know where I could purchase a new boxer puppy. Up until last Monday we had a 5 year old boxer called lulu who passed away due to a tumor on her kidney. She was a great dog but was cursed with bad health form the time we got her, skin allergies, heart trouble, tumor etc The vet seems to think it's hard to get good healty boxers in Ireland at the moment due to over breeding and suggests we might have to go to the UK to find one.
Anybody know where in Ireland there are good reputable boxer breeders. The house is like a morgue without lulu and we just need to replace her to to help myself and the kids get over the loss.

    Thanks in advance

Cottage Rescue have a boxer looking for a home - I know that's not what you asked but it is another option that might be worth considering ;)

    Sorry you lost Lulu

Sorry to hear about your loss I know if anything happened Tyson or Ali I would be devasated. I got Tyson from a breeder in Kilkenny town, I can remember exactly where the house is but not the name or number, I may be able to track it down from the paperwork I got with tyson (which I need to track down too lol)

I will have a root around for you tomorrow but so far Tyson (at 18 months) has had no problems and is a lovely calm dog (strange i must admit for a boxer) but he does have his moments now that he knows how to open the doors ARGGGHHHH :D

Just remember the happy and funny times you had and if you want a few hours with a boxer or two to help you relax until you get your own just give us a shout and we can sort something out.

    Shane

Thanks for the advice. I think we'll probably give it a month or so before go looking.

i think it would be a great idea to rescue one because the rescue shelters and pounds are very crowded.....even if you go to a pound and they don't have a boxer they will usually take your details and call you if they find one nearby or one comes in....sorry for your loss she looked lovely

every eijjit these days are breeding the boxers without checking to make sure they are not even related so I would be very careful and only go to a reputable breeder www.ikc.ie should have a list of breeders in your area

ps try www.irishanimals.ie to help find a new dog

The reason it is so hard to find healthy boxers is that so many are from backyard breeders who just mate any two dogs and do absolutely no health testing. This is not just Russian roulette for those puppies but injects the breed with more and more health issues that come up more frequently and in more severe forms. Due to their popularity, boxers are the *number one claiming breed* on pet insurance in the UK and Ireland right now, according to Allianz (PetPlan) statistics. They also come into rescues all the time, including young dogs, so it is worth considering a young adult rescue as well.

The best way to find a breeder is NOT to ring anyone in the Buy&Sell, or any of the online ads sites. Go to the ikc.ie website and ring the breed club secretary and ask for names of breeders that currently have puppies. Then do your research on the breed to find out what health issues breeders should be testing for. Then talk to every prospective breeder and ask for the certificates from specialists that indicate they are actually doing these tests and talk to them about the lines they are breeding. You want a breeder who breeds for conformation (a boxer that actually looks like a proper boxer) AND health. Too many will breed only for the former, or to make money off an unsuspecting pet market.

As the Irish national dog show is coming up over St Patrick's day another idea is to go talk to the boxer breeders there and see if you can find one you like, who also tests. Any good breeder will be delighted to talk about his or her lines and the care that goes into their breeding programme -- and will be very happy that a pet buyer actually has taken the time to learn about the importance of these things rather than buying the first puppy available in the small ads. If they shy away from discussing health issues and what they are doing about them, avoid that breeder.

The reason you go to show breeders with good lines is not a snobbish thing about getting offspring of champion dogs -- it is to get the HEALTHIEST offspring possible from breeders who care deeply about their dogs and breed, and know how to breed properly to avoid genetic problems, most of which are recessive -- eg hidden -- and appear when two supposedly 'healthy' dogs are bred. You need to know genetics, pedigrees, and back that up with health testing to breed responsibly.
