I have been cycling reasonably seriously for just over a year now. Whenever I do a spin over 60 or 70 miles I develop pain across my shoulders and neck (well actually more of a severe burning sensation). I have been told this could be due to the wrong frame size. As I intend to change bikes soon I am anxious to find out how you select the optimum frame size - is there a DIY technique or is it best left to the specialist shop?

It sounds like your bars might be too low, possibly because you have the saddle raised high enough to extend your legs fully. In that case a bigger frame might be the answer.

A bike shop should be able to give you decent advice on a proper fit, but will probably expect you to buy from them after going to the trouble. There's also a few online guides too. This one seems to be pretty popular.

What sort of a bike is it? Other simple thinks like brakes can affect it. It is is a straight handlebar many hold a hand on the brake lever all the time, if this is in the wrong position it can cause pain.
What is your frame size, and what is your inside leg length. There are online calculators to estimate what size you should go for.

In addition to the frame size things like saddle height, layback, stem length/angle can make a big difference.

If you're experiencing pain it might be worth visiting a physio - just in case...

The Cycle Superstore offer a Bikefit service which should help you find the right setup for you.

On any trip between a half hour to 3, I have pain at the base of the neck on the left size. Over the past 4 years I have put this down insufficient movement of my shoulder during spins.

During recent runs, I have to exercise my neck(tilt down and right) and rotate my shoulder to aleviate the tension.

the point made on bike set up is interesting. I have a good set up, that allows a balance between comfort and speed. But it may be worth a few tweeks.

At the moment there is a video for sale on e-bay about getting the road bike set-up correct.
