    Hi all,
I knew someone who is suffering from Vertigo for the last couple of months. He describes it as a sort of light-headedness, dizzyness, is unable to drive and work. Alot of tests have been done and nothing sinister is showing up- just Vertigo. As there seems to be no change since onset and seemingly no end in sight I would be very interested in hearing people's experiences- symptoms, duration, etc

My uncle reported vertigo for the first time in his life last year, immediately after purchasing a 4x4!

He experiences no other symptoms, he can climb ladders, look over the edge of buildings from a height etc. but there seems to be a height range that he experiences vertigo, below which he is fine and above which he is fine. It also appears to be something to do with his being in motion.

In a car he is fine, in a large truck he is fine but in a 4x4 he can't handle it at all

Can't offer any more insight and if your friend is getting medical help I'm sure they've looked at blood pressure etc.

well i'm just after my second bout of vertigo in a year. had it last march and then for a week start of january...
if i moved my head any way fast, i got very dizzy, and if standing would loose my balance, same a being drunk, but sober !!

i did't have an inner ear infection, which usually acuses it to occur. No real reason this time round dr said.. if i get it again dr will refer me to consultant etc...

    Hi,
Thanks for those replies- very helpful. My friend has it over two months now, had tests, including MRI and no definite cause. There has been no improvement whatsover and seemingly no end in site. His blood pressure is also quite low. Does it just go?

I suffer from vertigo on and off. Nausea and dizziness are the worst symptoms for me. When I get it, it lasts until I take something that the Doctor prescribes (not sure I can list medications here) and that clears it up and it usually doesn't come back for a couple of months. I too have low BP but I've never been told that has anything to do with it. I get car sick in 4x4's as well and on boats but not planes or normal cars. Again, I'm not sure the significance of this.

I'm a long-term sufferer of dizziness and I'd just like to tell other sufferers about an excellent site for information and peer support.
    It's www.dizzytimes.com

Not a sufferer myself, but I've heard wearing a bioflow strap, can give excellent results.

Just to add another aspect to this - I got vertigo as a side-effect from taking the anti-inflammtory drug Aulin - the very one that killed some people. Was taking them on and off as needed so it took me a few months to make the connection. I mentioned my suspicions to the GP but he was having none of it and wanted to prescribe anti-vertigo drugs and thankfully it was my osteopath who actually looked up the side-effects of Aulin and it was top of the list. Minute I stopped taking them, the vertigo went.

My mother had a really bad bout of it last year and numerous little bouts since then. At worst she had a week in bed where she could barely even move her head without vomiting:(. Her blood pressure was a bit low but not very low. With the more minor bouts she can function ok but maybe that's because of whatever medication she was prescribed at the first attack. (sorry I've no idea what it is). It's a nasty old dose and very debilitating. My mother, aunt and grandmother all have it. I'm just waiting my turn :o

There are many causes of vertigo and most of them are not hereditary, so hopefully you won't suffer with it.

OP, I've been suffering from vertigo for about 10 years now. In my case it's caused by my migraines, which appear to be largely caused by eating food I'm allergic to, so I'm prety much able to control them now. Used loose conciousness from it, 'twas pretty scary. Perhaps your friend should talk to his doctor about the possiblity of it being secondary to something like that? I know in my case the vertigo often appears without an actual headache, so if it's the same for him, it might just be an option he hasn't looked at yet.

I hope he finds a control for it, I know how scary it can be.

and my turn appears to have arrived:(
I had a mild bout of dizziness back in December for a few days which I put down to mild whiplash from being rear-ended a week ealier but it's back again now. It's not really bad but I certainly don't feel like I'm fully functional.
sigh... I guess a GP visit is in order.

Definitely visit your GP, and if he or she is referring you to a consultant it's a good idea to look for one who specialises in balance issues - normal ENTs most often don't.

Thanks Dizzyblonde I'll do that. i've looked at your site before when I was looking for some info for my mother. It's very useful.

Hopefully I've just got an ear infection or something but with my family history I should get it properly checked out.

Absolutely, especially since it started after an impact.

    Good luck :)

i had vertigo once about 7 years ago. Was kneeling on the floor and when I stood up I suddenly got very dizzy. Thought it would go away but it got worse. Couldn't walk in a straight line, walking into walls and the most perculiar thing was that when I shouted it got very bad.
Went to the doc and he put me on some anti-psychotic drugs. Can't remember the name of them now, but they worked !!!!!!!
Still have the odd dizzy spell but nothing like the full blown incident 7 years ago. Doc thought at the time it was as a result of a head cold I had the week before
