    MARK BROOM:

Since the start of 90s, East Londoner Mark Broom has always been a name that is synonymous with the UK electronic music scene. A truly prolific artist, he has a myriad of production credits to his name having worked with world renowned labels such as Mo-Wax, Warp, R&S, Soma, Ifach, Plink Plonk, GPR, Ferox, & Bpitch Control amongst others. It all started in the summer of 89 when he landed in Tenerife on vacation and stumbled across the delights of the emerging sounds of Chicago & Acid House. Returning to the UK, he immediately went in search of this new found music a pair of turntables were bought and with it, a musical career was born. A regular customer at Londons Fatcat record store, Mark found himself at the epicentre of a burgeoning scene. In 92, a certain Pete Baby Ford was on the scout for Djs to play at his new Club Night, Nude. When a mix tape was put directly in to his hands, Marks turntable skills were soon in demand. A short time afterwards, he found himself in being introduced to Ed Handley and Andy Turner from the infamous Black Dog Productions. The meeting brought about the foundations of a solid studio partnership, with the trio putting together a string of releases for the seminal General Productions Records, all recorded at UXB studios. Run by a certain Dave Hill, after two years of coming and going to his east London hideout, Dave approached Mark about making some music together. From there, a longstanding partnership was spawned with the founding of Pure Plastic Recordings in 1994. With the label having played host to some of Marks finest work, the release of the classic Angie is a shoplifter Lp in 1996 cemented his reputation as a leader in the scene. In 2001, further notable success was scored with the writing of Rue Easts Indoor Culture Lp alongside Dave Hill. An album which brought about the massive techno classic, Birmingham. Marks services as a Dj and re-mixer have also been in high demand over the past two decades having played around the globe at some of the worlds best clubs: from Fuse to Fabric, to La real and, he has also had the pleasure of reworking material from artists such as Steve Rachmad, Ken Ishi, The Advent, Charles Webster, Eddie Flashin Fowlkes, Ben Sims and Samuel L. Session to name but a few. With his recent signing to Ellen Alliens Bpitch Control, partnering with old co-hort Chris Baker under the guise of King Pin Cartel and the founding of a band project under the guise of 5 Mic Cluster. Expect to hear much, much more from Mark in 2007. With 5 Mics first demo already snapped up by Trevor Jacksons Output Recordings for an 8 track LP. He also has a string of first class releases and re-mixes lined up for the first half of the year. On this form, Broom may well be planning to take everyone to the cleaners in the not too distant future.

    JOE MCGRATH LIVE:

Joe first laid hands on a set of decks eleven years ago, and has never looked back. His first residency was at the now notorious Genius, in the Kitchen and that Tuesday night club was a milestone in Irish clubbing history. On a night when the doors of Dublins clubs were firmly shut, Genius was regularly drawing crowds of up to a thousand techno nutters. In 2000, Joe took the next step and started Damage at Switch, which ran for three great years with loads of Irish act's and international guests. Secret Cinema recorded a live cd there, Claude Young packed the house and well, it just rocked.... During all this madness Joe also got around to dj''in with Jeff Mills, Dave Clarke, Richie Hawtin, Stace Pullen and a heap of others.
Joe's first dj' support slot for an International act was for Mark Broom, it was a friday night for JDP in the Kitchen, and now his first Live set will be before Mark too. Freaky eh??
He has taken a break for the last two years to concetrate on production and renovating a 16th century castle into a state of the art recording studio and alot of travel. He's back now with a fresh sound, well rested with all new 007 material and playin on Ableton Live...

    STAM:
Kicking things off on the night we have Junction resident Stam. As one of the founding members Stam has rocked the club many times before, also creating a stir at underground nights such as Teknowarfare and Technotic. Arrive down early to see the man in action.

Just a reminder about our upcoming gig down in Radiocity. We have some free passes to give away early next week.

Also checkout the review of the last gig down at The Cavern on the 10th of Feb

    Re-re-re-gig reviews!

Sunil Sharpe and DJ Kalif + Americhord + Dave Prior at The Cavern,10th Feb.

This was the first Junction gig I've made it down to in a while and I think one of their first ones since they left The Life Bar a while ago. I missed Dave Prior's opening set but managed to catch most of Americhord who was rocking (technoing?) out with a heap of new material being played live on her Akai MPC200XL with some help from Ableton Live and a rather beefy looking Mackie mixing desk. As always Maura didn't fail to impress, what I want to know is when this new stuff is making it out on vinyl. Well Maura? You can tell Uncle skkatter!

I tried to get a few photos but because it was so sweaty and packed the lens on my camera actually started to fog up (I think it was because I'd cycled in and it was cold outside). With its low ceiling and sweaty rambunctious crowd, that night in The Cavern reminded me of some of my earlier (fonder) clubbing memories in The Funnel. It's been a while since I saw such an enthusiastic crowd, and the cavernous venue definitely added something to the old school rave atmosphere.

Pretty soon it was the main fight of the night, I found it hard to get to the front to trainspot but the guys started off with a stark percussive track I didn't recognise with Monolake's "Alaska" being quickly mixed in. Each of the guys had a pair of decks and a mixer and were quickly (and rather deftly) mixing something new in practically every 40 seconds or so. I was surprised and relieved by how they went for a weirder deeper sound than I'd expected. There was very little "lashin'", "bangin'" or "horsein'" it out in this set, but guys still maintained a very high energy level, people were going pretty mad for it. I'm pretty sure I heard bits of Maurizio, Oliver Ho, the Sleeparchive remix of Regis amongst other things. There was even a sprinkle of electro in places, and near the end things were taken up a notch with some drum and bass and hardcore stuff (which I didn't enjoy that much myself but most of the dancers in the top half of the room seemed well into it). They finished off with Aphex Twin's "XMD 5a" (from the Analord 10 release on Rephlex), a favourite of Sunil's, I remember when a few of us were drunk at my place before and he demanded I dig it out and play it.

So yeah, a great night! I was really pleased with how much interesting techno got mixed in without the floor being cleared. It all depends on the crowd I suppose, hopefully they'll all come back for Junction's next show in The Cavern with Mark Broom on the 2nd of March.
